However, seasonmg checks may occur m glued laminated members for the same reasons they do in sawn timbers, but generally to a much lesser degree . . 01 EQUILIBRIUM MOISTURE CONTENT Wood will give off or take on moisture from the surrounding air until the amount of moisture in the wood is in balance with that in the air. The moisture content of the wood at this point of balance is termed the equilibrium moisture content (EMC). The EMC varies with the tempera- ture and relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere and of the two, changes in relative humidity are most critical. For example, the EMC varies by 16 percent moisture content over a relative humidity range of 20 percent to 90 percent at a constant temperature of 70 degrees F. In contrast, at a constant relative humidity of 50 percent, the EMC varies by only 1 percent moisture content through a temperature range of 20 degrees to 90 degrees F. .02 CHECKING .03 Checking is the result of rapid lm.\ering of surface moisture content combined with differential moisture contents of the inner and outer portion of the piece. As wocxl loses m6isture content to the surrounding atmosphere, the outer cells of the members lose at a more rapid rate than the inner cells. As the outer cells try to shrink, they are restrained by the inner portion of the member which has a higher moisture content. The more ra'.pid the rate of drying, .the greater-will be the differential in shrinkage between the outer and inner fibers and the higher will be the shrinkage stresses. Differentials in the shrinkage rate of individual laminations tend to concentrate shrinkage stresses at or near the glue line. For this reason, when checking occurs, it is usually at or near glue lines. The presence of wood fiber separation indicates adequate glue bond and not delamination. When laminated members are glued within the range of moisture content limitations expressed in AITC standard specifications, they will approximate the moisture content in normal use conditions, thereby minimizing checking that might occur. Moisture content of lumber at the time of gluing is, therefore, of great important in the control of checking in service. However, serious rapid changes in moisture content after gluing will result in shrinkage or swelling of the wood, and may develop stresses in both glued joint and wood that will cause checking. PROTECTION The application of sealers, paints and similar protective measures to the surface of the member will retard, but not prevent checking under extreme conditions. Laminated members to be used under conditions that may produce checking more than in the form of slight surface checks, should receive consideration from the standpoint of reiuiring sealers and other protection in ac- cordance with AITC protection specifications. Glued laminated members are made from laminations that are thin enough to season readily in kiln drying schedules without developing checks. Since checks lie in a radial plane and since the majority of laminations are flat grain, checks are so positioned in horizontally laminated beams that they will not materially affect shear strength. In cases where members are designed with laminations vertical, and where checks may affect the shear strength of a beam, their effect may be evaluated in the same manner as for sawn lumber. Seasoning checks in bending members affect the horizontal shear value only. They are usually not of structural importance unless the checks are significant in depth, occur in the mid-height of the member and near the support, and shear governs the design of the members. All of these factors must be considered in appraising checks from a structural viewpoint. In general, the reduction in shear strength is directly proportional to the ratio of depth of check to the width of the bending memher. Checks in columns are not of structural importance unless the check develops into a split, thereby reducing the 1/d of the column.
