Re:- RooftopsolarMHME -
R2H Project No.: 17093
,Dear Mr. Miller:'
The purpose of this letter is to summarize whether the proposed solar panel and ballast layout will affect the
building integrity. Specifically, the roof framing and building lateral system. Ballasted solar panels were also
-checked for wind uplift. Solar panel ballast layout and specifications are provided by Home Energy Systems.
According the specifications, the maximum height of the solar panels is 11.34 inches. It is assumed that
because this.is less than 12 inches, there will be no live load above and below the panels. The calculated
maximum solar panel weight of 13.86 psf is less than the live load of 20.0 psf therefore, the roof framing is
adequat
,
e for supporting the proposed solar panel layout.
Based on the specifications, the average weight for the ballasted solar panel is 6.47 psf or 0.72 psf less than the
design load of 7.0 psf used in the calculations. Therefore, no alterations to the building lateral system are
required.,-..-
Should you have any questions or need any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
Thank ybu._

INTRODUCTION
Helix is a m6unting system and photovoltaic (PV) module integrated solution. It is designed to be installed on
flat*7roof ~uilclihg~ (less than a 1 in 12 slope) without the use of penetrating fasteners through the roof membrane.
There are two configurations for the Helix Product, South Tilt (ST) and Dual Tilt (DT). This document demonstrates the
wind're;istame of the system and its compliance with the International Building Code, and is meant to be used in
'Cdnju'6cti6n %~ith the Helix DT Design Tool, found here, https://helix-calculator.sunpower.com.

The Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) released a document (SEAOC PV2-2012) that

BALLAST DETERMINATION
" .—The figures, tables, and equations in ASCE 7-10 are used as applicable to determine design forces on buildings
6 iid other, structures. 'However, the values in ASCE 7-10 are not applicable to products like Helix. In such cases,
ASCE 7-10 requires compliance'With its section 26. 1.1 and wind tunnel testing.
In order for, these tests to be applicable, the wind tunnel testing must include a model of a representative
building the modules will be installed on, as well as accurate modeling of upstream turbulence caused by
terrain roughness.
The basic equation used. to determine design wind forces in ASCE 7-10 is the velocity pressure equation:
q (ASCE 7-10, Equation 30.3-1) .00256K.,K~,KdV'
To determine the pressure, and therefore design loads, the qz determined in accordance with these methods is
~ultiplied* by.a Yelocity pres'sure coefficient, Cp.
P = qCpypE
In this equa'.tion,~q')ncorporates the site-specific K variables, basic wind speed V, and parapet factor.
In ord&r,.to determine ballast quantities. needed to resist wind pressures, Wind Force (F) is determined by taking
the wind pressure over the module area: 7w,
F qCpypEAm
Panel GCp values scale with building dimensions and can be determined from Figure 1. These coefficients allow
for'the determination of the required product weight mandated by code.
J
ASC.E 7- 10, gives the equati`6n'for Kz as well as a rational method to interpolate between exposure categories.,
K, 2.01 Zeval )2/1'eva, (ASCE 7-10, Table 30.3-1, Note 1)
ASiCE.7101 2.,4.1.,gives an ASID load factor of 0.6D + 0.6W.
Solvingf6r D, we get D = W. In'other words, we need to provide a dead load that equals the wind force to
arrive at a ~6~elarray weight. This can be achieved with a combination of weight provided by the module and
t.sy~iem com p-~66-ents, as'Well as cement ballast blocks.
7
Combining' the 'above equations, the required dead load to resist wind loads.becomes;
D =.00256K V 2CpypEA (Equation 1) Kd

BALLAST DETERMINATION
Jhe figy,res" tables, and equations in ASCE 7-10 are used as applicable to determine design forces on buildings
and other structures.,. However, the values in ASCE 7-10 are not applicable to products like Helix. Insuchcases,
ASC E 7-10 requires compliance with its section 26. 1.1 and wind tunnel testing.
In order forthese tests to be applicable, the wind tunnel testing must include a model of a representative
building the modules will be installed on, as well as accurate modeling of upstream turbulence caused by
terrain roObhness.
The, ~asi6' equation used to determine design wind forces in ASCE 7-10 is the velocity pressure equation:
q_, .00256K,,K_,tKdV' (ASCE 7-10, Equation 30.3-1)
To determine the'pressure, and therefore design loads, the qz determined in accordance with these methods is
by a velocity pn~ssure coefficient, Cp.
P = qCpypE
In this equation, q incorporates the site-specific K variables, basic wind speed V, and parapet factor.
Ih ord6r to determine ballast quantities needed to resist wind pressures, Wind Force (F) is determined by taking,
the,windpressure over the module area:
F = qCpypEA,,,
'Panel GCp values scale with building dimensioni and can be determined from Figure 1. These coefficients allow,
for -the 14 d :
etermination of the required product weight mandated by code. 7,
ASCE 7-10,~gives the6quation for Kzaswell as a rational method to interpolate between exposure categories.
Zeval 1Z /aeval K_, 2. geva) (ASCE 7-10, Table 30.3-1, Note 1)
ASCE 7.10, 2.4.1 gives an ASID load factor of 0.6D + 0.6W.
Solving !or.Dl we get D = W.',In other words, we need to provide a dead load that,equals the wind force to
a . rriveat -a safe array weight. This can be achieved with a combination of weight provided by the module and
~system components, as well as cement ballast blocks.
Combining the abov6 equations, the required dead load to resist wind loads becomes;
D =.00256KKdV1Cp ypEAm (Equation 1)
