Blasti ng is raq ui ~ed in order to· e cava te the footing trenches to a depth of two feet below finished grade as required by the County of San Diego. Ba ~P.d on visual observations made during our inspection on August 11, 1972, it is our opinion that the blasting is being accomplished in a satisfactory manner so as to caus e a minimum of fracturing and disturbance to the rock in the bo t tom ~ of the excavations and that the rock is suitable for the support of the proposed structures. The existing floor joists are spaced at 16° o.c. and have a clear span of 11' -0". According to Table no. 25 -T, UBC, the joists may span 18' -0". A 2° deep notch anywhere along the bottom of the joists will reduce the effective depth of the joists to a 10" dimension. The table allows a span of 15' -6 .. for 2 x 10@ 16" o.o. Therefore it is clear that such notches will not affect the load carrying capacity of the floor joists, and are approved by the Architect.subject to the following condition: the refrigerant piping must be protected from puncture by drywall nailing by means of metal covers over the notches or other equivalent means.
