Structural Evaluation of Existing Roof Structure to Support Proposed Roof Top PV Arrays
The following presents the results of the evaluation of the capacity of the roof structure at the existing
building located at 2870 Whiptail Loop East, Carlsbad, CA 92010, to support additional loads from the
proposed roof mounted PV system . The added loads evaluated include gravity, wind and seismic loads
in accordance with the current California Building Code (CBC) and the provisions of ASCE 7-10. The
adequacy of the existing roof is evaluated based on sections 403.3 and 403.4 of the 2016 California
Existing Building Code (CEBC) for added gravity, and lateral wind and loads seismic respectively to
existing buildings.
The existing building is a one story structure with a total roof area approximately 97,920 sq. ft. The
existing construction consists of precast concrete "tilt-up" exterior walls and panelized wood roof
supported by open web steel joist purlins and open web steel girder trusses. The roof acts as a
horizontal diaphragm transferring tributary lateral wind and seismic forces to the exterior and interior
concrete shear walls that transfer the lateral loads to the foundations.
CEBC Section 403.3 allows up to 5% of existing gravity loads to be added to existing buildings without
having to evaluate or strengthen existing supporting structural elements. Gravity loads include both dead
and live loads. Roof live loads can be omitted where low profile PV solar panel systems are mounted
within 2'-0" of the roof surface such as the Pro Solar racking system with 10 degree tilt shown on the PV
System drawings. The minimum building code (CBC) prescribed roof load varies between 20 psf and 12
psf for roof members depending on the tributary roof area supported. The superimposed weight of the
proposed PV system including PV modules and racking system averages 6.4 psf. The added PV array
dead load to the building roof is less than the original design roof live load over the same area, therefore
the additional PV system weight will not increase the gravity loads to the existing roof elements.
CEBC Section 403.4 allows alterations to existing buildings to increase seismic lateral loads by no more
than 10% without having to evaluate or strengthen existing seismic lateral load resisting structural
elements. The seismic lateral loads resisted by building lateral load resisting elements are based on the
tributary building weight. The following calculations compare the additional weight of the proposed roof
mounted PV system including PV modules and racking to the existing tributary seismic weight to the roof
level in each major direction. The weight of the proposed roof top PV system increases the lateral
seismic loads tributary to the roof diaphragm maximum 7.35% in the North-South direction which is less
than the 10% limit prescribed by CEBC section 403.4.

RM10 Li-BUILDER PRODUCT ASSUMPTIONS
RM1 0 -Ballasted Flat Roof Systems
1. Building and System Occupancy/Risk Category II
2. Building Height~ 60 ft.
3. Roof Slope> 2.4° (112:12) and< 5.6° (1-3/16:12)
4. Friction Tested Roofing Types: EDPM, PVC, TPO, and Mineral Cap
5. Required Setback from Module Edge to Building Edge for Wind Tunnel: 3 ft
6. Surrounding Building Grade: Level
7. Wind Design: Basic Wind Speed Range is 85-150 mph (ASCE 7-05) and 110-170 mph (ASCE 7-10). Wind Exposure: B or C (ASCE
7-05/ASCE 7-10). Occupancy/Risk Category II buildings and systems with a 25 year design life. Insertion of the project at-grade elevation
can result in a reduction of wind pressure. If your project is in a special case study region or in an area where wind studies have been
performed, please verify with your jurisdiction to ensure that elevation effects have not already been factored into the wind speed. If
elevation effects have been included in your wind speed, please select Oft.
8. Ground Snow Load (ASCE 7·05/ASCE 7·10): 0·60 psf. Results are based on uniform snow loading and do not consider unbalanced,
drifting, and sliding conditions. Roof snow load reduction calculated per Section 7.3 of ASCE 7 with the following assumptions: Exposure
factor= 0.9, Thermal factor= 1.2.
9. RM1 0 Ballast Bay Weight: -3.5 tbs
10. Module Gaps (E/W) = 0.25 in
11. Seismic: Installations must be in seismic site class A, B, C, or Das defined in ASCE 7·05/ASCE 7·10
12. Ballast calculations are based on ASCE 7·05/ASCE 7· 1 0 load combinations and product specific wind tunnel testing.
13. Ballast Blocks: The installer is responsible tor procuring the ballast blocks (Concrete Masonry Units-CMU) and verifying the required
minimum weight needed for this design. CMU to comply with ASTM standard specification for concrete roof pavers designation C1491 or
C90 with an integral water repellant suitable for the climate it is placed. It is recommended that the blocks are inspected periodically for
any signs of degradation. If degradation of the block is observed, the block should immediately be replaced. The CMU ballast block
should have nominal dimensions of 4"x8"x16". The actual block dimensions are 3/8" less than nominal dimensions. Ballast blocks should
have weight as specified for the project in the "Inspection" section of this report.
14. Limitations of Responsibility: It is the user's responsibility to ensure that inputs are correct for your specific project. Unirac is not the
solar, electrical, or building engineer of record and is not responsible for the solar, electrical, or building design for this project.
t 5. The system is certified to UL2703 when properly installed. See the installation guide for more detail.
SEAOC PV1 ·2012: Structural Seismic Requirements and Commentary for Rooftop Soar Photovoltaic Arrays
Assumptions for unattached photovoltaic arrays:
1. Importance Factor: Array (Ip)"' 1.0, Building (le) = 1.0
2. Site Class = D
3. S = design seismic displacement of the array relative to the roof
4. Minimum Separation: Array to Array= o.s-·s, Array to Roof Edge or Obstruction with Qualified Parapet= 1.0*S, Array to Roof Edge
with Unqualified Parapet "" 1.5*S
5. s8 = mapped MCER, 5 percent damped, spectral response acceleration parameter at short periods per ASCE 7-05/ASCE 7-10
6. s0s = design, 5 percent damped spectral acceleration parameter at short periods per ASCE 7-05/ASCE 7·1 o
7. A minimum module return flange of 0.9in (when using 1-3/4 in. clip bolts) is required for all RM10 installations
8. A minimum module return flange of 0.65in (when using 2 in. clip bolts) is required for all RM10 installations
9. Coefficient of friction used for calculations per Unirac, fnc. Roof Mount Ballast Support Coefficient of Friction Testing report dated
October 4, 2013. Roof pads are required for PVC, TPO, and EDPM roofs to attain a minimum coefficient of friction of 0.4. Mineral cap
roofs do not require roof pads to attain a coefficient of 0.4.
