RESOLUTION NO. 89-370
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING THE CLASSIFI- CATION PLAN AND SALARY SCHEDULE OF THE CITY TO
ADOPT THE CLASSIFICATION OF MICROCOMPUTER
SPECIALIST.

concurs, that the classification of Microcomputer Specialist
should be adopted and included in the City's Classification
Plan and Salary Schedule.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council Of tl
City of Carlsbad, California, as follows:

1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council authorizes and directs the Cil
Manager to add the classification of Microcomputer Specialist
as described in Attachment A, attached hereto and made a part
thereof.
3. That the City Council authorizes and directs the Cit
Manager to add the title of Microcomputer Specialist to the
Miscellaneous Salary Schedule at the range of $1,080.20 -
$1,312.99 biweekly as shown on Attachment B, attached hereto

MICROCOMPUTER SPECIALIST
DEFINITION
Under direction, to design, provide liaison and technical assistance to microcomputer users; consult with department representatives to determine hardware/software requirements and develop specifications; install and troubleshoot software and hardware problems; and to do re1 ated work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Microcomputer Specialist is a specialized class for positions providinc support primarily to microcomputer users. Positions in the class may assist wit! other data processing division activities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Designs, develops, and modifies programs for microcomputer applications.
Installs microcomputer equipment and software; customizes installed software tc the specific requirements of the user department.
Evaluates and recommends microcomputer hardware and software in consideratior of department and City requirements.
Responds to inquiries and provides technical assistance regarding microcomputer systems and programs; coordinates activities to resolve program and systen probl ems.
Participates in identifying micro/mainframe communication requirements, and ir the development of any re1 ated programs.
Directs the activities of a microcomputer user group; edits and distributes i microcomputer newsletter, and otherwise initiates or coordinates communication: regarding microcomputer systems, programs, and applications.
Maintains the "Guide1 ines for Microcomputers" Manual.
Maintains a library of microcomputer resource materials.
QUALIFICATIONS
Know1 edqe of:
MS-DOS and Macintosh microcomputer hardware and software.
Principles and techniques of microcomputer systems, programming, and networking<
Computer logic and mathematics.

Use, capability, characteristics and 1 imitations of microcomputers and related equipment.
Principal languages used in microcomputer programs.
Ability to:
Analyze and def i ne probl ems and conceptual i ze pract i cal mi crocomputer sol uti ons u
Devel op and revi se microcomputer programs.
Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Work effectively and cooperatively with computer system users and department staff.
Prepare reports.
Lead and coordinate the activities of a user group.
Experience and Education
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide thc required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain thc knowledge and abi 1 i ties would be:
Experience
One year of professional microcomputer systems and programming experience with systems similar to those used at the City of Carlsbad.
Education
Equivalent to an Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in data processing or a closely related field, with emphasiz on microcomputer systems and programming.
Special Reauirements
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver’s license, and a satisfactory driving record.
