2 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CARLSBAD APPROVING THE FORMAL NAMING OF THE
3 TWIN INNS GAZEBO THE L. JOHN SIMONS TWIN INNS
4 GAZEBO

WHEREAS, Council Policy 48, entitled "Naming Rights of Parks, and Municipal
6
Facilities" provides an opportunity for the Council to name parks, municipal facilities and
7
amenities within those facilities in recognition of significant contributions that individuals
9 have made to enhancing the public life and well being of the residents of the City of
JO Carlsbad; and
11 WHEREAS, Council Policy 48 establishes the criteria for the naming rights of
12 parks, municipal facilities, and amenities within parks or municipal facilities in
13 consideration of financial contributions or in recognition of any significant contributions
14 to the City of Carlsbad that it wishes to honor; and
WHEREAS, Council Policy 48 provides a procedure for applicants to submit
16
written proposals for naming rights of parks, municipal facilities, and amenities within
17
parks or municipal facilities; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Nelson has followed that procedure in submitting a
2Q written proposal to formally name the Twin Inns Gazebo located in Magee Park the L.
21 John Simons Twin Inns Gazebo; and
22 WHEREAS the City has received written consent from Maureen Simons, wife of
23 L. John Simons, for the use of his name; and
24 WHEREAS, on January 31, 2011, the Parks and Recreation Commission
25 reviewed the proposal for consistency with the criteria identified in the Council Policy
26
and has unanimously voted to support the City Council's authorization to formally name
27
the gazebo; and

1 WHEREAS, The City Council has reviewed the proposal and found it to be
2 consistent with the criteria identified in the Council Policy, and
3 WHEREAS the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club has agreed to provide a modest
4 commemorative bronze plaque to be placed alongside an existing narrative bronze
5 plaque, and inscribed as follows, "L. John Simons Twin Inns Gazebo. Give 110%."

WHEREAS the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club has generously agreed to support
7
the ongoing maintenance needs of the gazebo by providing in-kind project labor and8
any future revenue from the sale of Carlsbad Gazebo Walk of Honor Pavers to the City
10 of Carlsbad; and
11 WHEREAS, There will be an minor direct fiscal impact overall to the City
12 associated with the proposal;
13 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
14 Carlsbad, California, as follows:

1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the Twin Inns Gazebo be formally named the L. John Simons Twin
' Inns Gazebo.
3. The term of the naming shall commence on the date hereof, and shall
19 terminate on the 25th anniversary of the date of this Resolution.

PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a Regular Meeting of the City Council
of the City of Carlsbad on the 8th day of February, 2011, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Council Members Hall, Kulchin, Blackburn, Douglas and Packard
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
