AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING CHAPTER 21.41 OF TITLE 21 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE TO REVISE THE REGULATIONS REGARDING FREESTANDING SIGNS IN COMMERCIAL ZONES TO PERMIT COMMUNITY IDENTITY SIGNS. (ZCA.-79) ~~ The City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California does ordain as follows: SECTION 1: That Title 27,. Chapter 21.41 of the Carlsbad Municipal Code is amended by the amendment of Subsection (5) of Section 21.41.070 to read as follows: "(5) In C-1 and C-2 Zones and at retail commercial use ' C-M Zone, one freestanding sign may be placed on each street frontage of a lot, provided that the sign area of the freest; sign is included withiwthe aggregate sign area allowed for 1 lot according to the provisions of Table 1 above and that thc height of the freestanding sign does not exceed the height 01 building or thirty-five feet, whichever is less. In the C-2 Zone, additional freestanding signs are peraji on each street frontage of a lot provided the following cond' are met: (a) The additional freestanding signs are Monument Sign not greater than 8 feet in height and 8 feet in length; (b) The signs shall not be erected within 200 feet of another freestanding sign on the same property; .. (e) The signs shall be so oriented that the primary vie from surface streets; 4 (d) The aggregate sign area fo-r the entire lot does not the sign area allowed for the lot according to the provision Table 1; (e) No portion of such sign shall extend over the publi right-of-way, or be within 15 feet to any interior property driveway or intersection; and (f) A,Conditionai Use Permit shall be approved by the F Commission, or the City Council on appeal, based on the finc that the Monument Signs are appropriate for the use of the property, the design of the dev,elopment, and relationship tc adjoining property. Signs approved by Specific Plan, Master or Planned Unit Development need not be approved by a Condit i Use Permit* 1 I .. , ; , .+ v v 9- 1 SECTION 2: That Title 21, Chapter 21.41 of the Carlsbad 211 Municipal Code is amended by the addition of Section 21.41.07 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 to. read as follows: "Section 21 .41 .075, Community Identity Signs - +n additio to all other signs permitted in this Chapter, property within the boundaries of a Master Plan, Specific Plan or Planned Un Development may have a sign program that provides for entranc exit, directional and community identity signs provided the sign program is approved.as part of either the Master Plan, Specific Plan, Planned Unit Development or any amendments the and further, no sign shall have an area greater than 150 sq. or height of 15 feet, and the aggregate sign area of all sign in the Community Ide'ntity Program shall not exceed an amount based on 100 sq. ft. plus 3 sq. ft. per acre of the Community within the Plan. Bmendments to an approved sign program may be granted by the Planning Commission if it is determined SUC amendments are consistent with the overall objectives of the Plan.
