Professional Theatre Tour -Carlsbad
Elementary Schools
Intrepid will bring live, professional theatre to
six elementary schools in Carlsbad. These
productions will include workshops for
students in theatre fundamentals, acting
techniques and language alongside a
professional production of Alice in
Wonderland, Andrades and the Lion or A
Midsummer Night's Dream. With a decade-
long acclaimed history in touring professional
theatre to schools, Intrepid seeks to
specifically engage elementary schools in
Carlsbad, an age group often underserved by
professional theatre school tours. Engagement
in live theatre makes literacy exciting for
students of all ages and learning abilities, and
early exposure can dramatically increase
enthusiasm for language and the arts.

Intrepid has run a highly successful
professional theatre tour through San Diego
schools for the past decade, serving over
100,000 students to date, presenting five
Shakespeare plays for middle and high school
students, as well as three productions for
elementary school students -Alice in
Wonderland, Androcles and the Lion and A
Midsummer Night's Dream. As an example of
this program, our most recent performance of
Androcles and the Lion during the 2017-2018
school tour was held at La Costa Heights
Elementary School in Encinitas, along with our
accompanying Day of Drama workshop series,
which we are also offering as part of this grant.
We ran three workshops in the morning and
rotated all of the students through all three
workshops, bringing in costumes and music to
supplement information about the play. After
the workshops, we performed the 50-minute
immersive and interactive production of
Androcles and the Lion for over 300 students,
many of whom were seeing live theatre for the
very first time. Through email feedback,
teachers reported high levels of student
engagement in the workshops and the
performance, which had a direct positive
impact on academics and increased
enthusiasm for literature and the performing
arts. This was also our third year in a row
performing at La Costa Heights. Both this
feedback and this retention rate are consistent
with a high percentage of the schools we work
with.
What makes the Professional Theatre Tour -
Carlsbad Elementary Schools project
distinctive?
There are currently a number of professional
theatre companies offering touring productions
of live theatre through schools; however,
hardly any are focused on elementary school
engagement. We believe that enthusiasm for
the arts begins early and that exposure to live
theatre at a young age can activate learning
skills otherwise unavailable to students. This is
especially true in students with special needs
or second language learners who find
traditional classroom structures challenging.
Educators are able to leverage these live
theatre productions to enable all students to
access literature and language in new and
exciting ways, regardless of these challenges.
Additionally, our selection of three productions
enables educators to choose the right play for
their students, based on age and needs of the
curriculum. While Andrades and the Lion is an
appropriate introduction to live theatre for the
very young ages, specifically Grades K-2, A
Midsummer Night's Dream engages Grades 3-
5, supporting the older elementary school
students in their preparation for middle school
academics. Alice in Wonderland is highly
adaptable and accessible to Grades K-5,
which makes it ideal for elementary school
assemblies with mixed grade levels. The
classroom materials and workshops we
provide support teachers as they build upon
these live theatre productions to develop
critical thinking skills and creativity across all
academic areas.
What are the goals (outputs and/or outcomes)
of the project? How will you measure your
goals?
Who is your target population and why? How
will you reach them?
Intrepid seeks to conduct workshops and
performances of live theatre at six elementary
schools in Carlsbad and to engage students in
language and literacy through these
workshops and live performances. We will
solicit feedback via a comprehensive email
survey from teachers, students and
administrators after the performances to
evaluate the success of the levels of student
engagement. Additionally, each performance
includes a question-and-answer period after
the production where students and actors can
join in conversation, another measure of
engagement. We will also distribute classroom
materials that offer lesson plan options for
teachers to build upon the work Intrepid
presents and we will request feedback via
email from the teachers on the engagement
levels of the students when working with these
materials. Lastly, we prioritize personal
relationships with teachers and schools and
will also obtain feedback via personal phone
calls. Over the past decade, we have refined
our school tour as a result of these personal
conversations with teachers, both on-site and
via phone and email after the performance and
have a maintained a high retention rate for the
school tour from year to year as a direct result
of these relationships with teachers.
Our target population is elementary school
students, first through fifth grades, in Carlsbad.
We will reach out to them via email and phone
calls with the school administrators, principals,
English teachers and arts teachers
