the joy of making music is a precious element
of daily living for everyone, available to all
regardless of an individual's age, income level
or ethnic background. The Museum is
dedicated to interpreting and sharing with a
broad audience the unique accomplishments
and lasting impact of the music products
industry through a variety of permanent and
special exhibitions, live performances, and

A concert series is an integral part of any
special exhibition that explores a musical
instrument. The exhibition provides a
meaningful education which is then deepened
by a live music experience. It brings the
instruments on the wall to life, and opens our
ears to new sonic and expressive possibilities.
We have been using this model since we
started curating our own special exhibitions
and have had great success with concerts
within the context of a particular instrument
family. The most notable series was our
banjo-themed concert series which
accompanied the special exhibition, 'The
Banjo: A New Day for an Old Instrument."
This series presented ten concerts that
highlighted the banjo in a variety of genres.
From bluegrass to blues, these crowd-pleasing
concerts brought top-notch banjo artists to
Carlsbad -Alison Brown, Sammy Shelor, Otis
Taylor and Tony Trischka, to name just a few.
Nearly all concerts sold out and audience
feedback was mainly "do more!" Other special
exhibition concert series have explored harps,
ukuleles, Dreadnought guitar, harp guitar, reed
instruments, violin, and slide guitar. Our track
record as a presenting organization is
excellent. We present live music roughly three
times a month to a typically sold out room. We
have a dedicated following of attendees,
professional sound and lighting, ample
backline, and a strong marketing team to
support our efforts. Most importantly, we have
a strong reputation within the artist community.
We are known as an organization that treats
artists as VIPs.
What makes the Accordions ALIVE! project
distinctive?
The Museum of Making Music is unique in that
we curate all our special exhibitions "in-
house." This means that the content being
delivered in the exhibition is entirely original,
developed by our team in collaboration with
experts in the field. We present stories that
have not been told in a Museum setting with
artifacts that have rarely been seen. The story
of the accordion is no different. "Accordions:
Expanding Voices in the USA" presents a
snapshot of the state of the accordion now,
exploring the myriad ways that its aficionados
are using it. Leaving stereotypes in the dust,
the exhibition includes recordings and stories
from musicians playing the accordion in
everything from classical and jazz to Norteno
and punk. It features an exploded accordion
that provides a glimpse at the instrument's
insides, historical examples illustrating the
development of the accordion and interactive
instruments where visitors can make their own
accordion music. Attendees to each concert
will receive complimentary admission to the
Museum galleries and accordion exhibition.
The concert series is an essential component
to the exhibition. Audience members will have
a chance to deepen their understanding of the
accordion by hearing directly from the artists.
These world class musicians rarely tour in the
area but are drawn to this project because of
their excitement for the accordion.
Additionally, the intimacy of our venue (150
seats) provides attendees a chance to interact
with the musicians in a way that cannot be
achieved in traditional venues.
What are the goals (outputs and/or outcomes)
of the project? How will you measure your
goals?
Our overall goal is to provide over 900
Carlsbad residents a meaningful engagement
in the arts, mirroring the city goal of reinforcing
artistic opportunities for residents, and lifelong
learning for all ages. A successful concert
series is measured by the quality of artists, the
number of people who attend, and post-
concert survey feedback from attendees. Our
attendance objective is to average 130
attendees per concert. This will be measured
by ticket sales through our ticketing platform,
Altru. Altru is a comprehensive single-solution
database management program that enables
cultural organizations to track program
attendance and to store constituent contact
information for streamlined communication
such as post-concert surveys and mailers.
The robust documentation, measurement and
reporting capabilities of Altru are critical to our
success and learnings. Audience surveys will
be emailed out to attendees after each
concert. These surveys will collect
demographics, reveal how they heard about
event, measure overall concert experience,
encourage qualitative feedback through open-
ended questions, and gather feedback on
concert content. Since surveys are
implemented shortly after each concert, we
can implement appropriate program
improvements recommended by concert
attendees before the next concert. The
exhibition curator has been working closely
with the accordion community during the
development of the exhibition. This has
provided us access to elite artists and top
performers in the field. With four out of the
seven artists confirmed (and several more in
the works) the caliber of participating artists is
off to a great start!
Who is your target population and why? How
will you reach them?
Our target population is Carlsbad residents.
We hope to provide a meaningful engagement
in the arts to over 900 individuals during this
grant term. Over 6,700 people on our mailing
list will receive monthly mailers and
promotions. Our social media marketing
efforts will touch 8,818 Facebook and 7,856
Twitter followers. The marketing for this
project will also include flyer drops to senior
centers, to encourage residents to carpool.
Also, waiving the $10 general admission and
$7 senior admission for all program
participants is an amazing programming
addition and great to market along with the
Accordions Alive! program. If 160 people sold
out a concert at a senior rate, that is $1,120 of
revenue the Museum is waiving as a program
component. With marketing targeted to
Carlsbad residents, this is a great added value
to the participants.
