Dancers will learn to use dance as a language to express themselves as well as a platform to tell their own story. For this project, the dance dept. will partner with San Deigo Dance Theater. San Diego Dance Theater's missions are: (1) Create and perform intelligent dances that breathe life into the people of our region and beyond. (2) Provide access to the viewing, training in, and dancing of these dances by people representing diversity of all kinds. Yes San Diego Dance Theater guest dance teaching artist-in-residency program at Sage Creek High School This artist-in-residency program will provide rigorous weekly training in modern dance technique taught by San Diego Dance Theater (SDDT) professional teaching artists who are working dance artists in the San Diego region, a field trip to one of SDDT's professional dance performance, and education on the legacy and history of the development of the vibrant San Diego dance scene. The program is being developed collaboratively between San Diego Dance Theater and Sage Creek High School faculty to thoroughly utilize their new performing arts facilities and encourage the inclusion of the arts in the school's STEM-focused curriculum. 02/01/2019 10/14/2019 2500 Total Number of Expected Participants for 50 Project Total Number of Expected Audience 350 Attendance for Project Provide a brief example of a similar recent project by you or your organization and why it was successful. In 2016 under the direction of Carlsbad Unified Faculty Teacher, Kristie Christman, Sage Creek High School expanded its P.E. curriculum of Dance 1 , 2, and 3 through launching a dance company. The company and Dance PE classes produces two annual staged concerts as well as perform at various community events throughout Carlsbad. In October 2018 the company traveled to LA to participate in workshops and perform at a 3 day conference. The program has benefited from support from school faculty and the addition of a new performing arts center on campus. Exposure to the program offerings inspires students' lifelong appreciation and passion for the arts. As part of San Diego Dance Theater's ongoing Artist-in-Residence Outreach Programs, four dance residency programs took place August 2017 through June 2018 at two distinct San Diego Unified Arts Magnet Schools and at one charter school. Developed collaboratively with the individual schools to meet the needs of each student population, the programs provided sustained, sequential dance and production training. The student's growth was demonstrated in culminating community performances and feedback gathered from dancers, staff, teachers, and community members. High Tech High teacher Lisa Griffin said of the programs, "I'm particularly impressed by the opportunities they have provided for my students at High Tech High over the past several years. I'm continually impressed by their ability to not only manage a high-level professional dance arts organization, but also maintaining a strong focus on education and outreach." What makes the San Diego Dance Theater guest dance teaching artist-in-residency program at Sage Creek High School project distinctive? What makes this program most unique is that it offers the opportunity for students to learn from professional working dance artists in the San Diego Community. Many of the dance teaching artists began training in middle and high school programs such as the one being developed at Sage Creek, went on to train at colleges across the country, and came back as professional performers and dance educators. Students will receive 20 weekly 70-minute classes during the school day taught by professional dance teaching artists who are also professional working artists. Classes will teach dance techniqe, choreography, improvisation, and history. In addition, students will take a field trip to see a professional concert produced by San Diego Dance Theater. Classroom teachers will work closely alongside the guest teaching artists in the classroom, providing educational opportunities not only for the students but for the faculty teachers as well. Sage Creek Public High School is heavily focused on competitive academics. Bringing dance to the students is essential because it teaches perseverance, effective collaboration, and creativity, which is necessary for problem solving. The 2018 Americans for the Arts national survey found that Americans believe more strongly than ever that the arts promote personal well-being, help us understand other cultures in our community, and are essential to a well-rounded K-12 education. In an effort to expand and broaden the scope of learning and curriculum, we are developing an artist-in- residence program with San Diego Dance Theater. The program will provide sustained, sequential dance and production training. What are the goals (outputs and/or outcomes) of the project? How will you measure your goals? In addition to physical strength and flexibility improvements, students will be able to: 1.lnterpret meaning and impact of dance: a) Describe and demonstrate how to communicate an idea or a mood in a dance (e.g., with exaggerated everyday gesture or emotional energies) b) Research and identify dances from different historic periods or cultures and make connections between social change and artistic expression in dance. c) explain how dancers from various cultures and historical periods reflect diversity and values. 2. Make connections and applications across disciplines and development of life skills and career competencies. a) Demonstrate curricular concepts through dance b) Give examples of how dance relates to other subjects c) Examine the training, education, and experience needed to pursue dance career options 3. Create/invent dance movements a) Invent multiple possibilities to solve a given movement problem and develop the material into a short study. Faculty teachers will work closely with SDDT teaching artists and administrative staff to develop individualized curriculum, study guides, and reflection prompts. Students will be asked to set their own goals for the course and maintain a reflective journal. They will be evaluated on an individual basis, not in comparison. They will be prompted based on The Pear lnstitute's Clover Model to consider how the program contributes to personal balance, as well as their ability to apply the concepts they learn to other areas of study and life. Before and after surveys will be provided to assess whether or ' ' Who is your target population and why? How will you reach them? The program will take place during the regular school day for high school students who are enrolled in Dance PE. As such, the target population is the approximately 1,250 students of Sage Creek High School which come from White (52.6%), Hispanic/Latino (24.1 %), Asian (10.8%), Mixed Race (8.8%), Black/African American (1.8%), Filipino (1 .4%), American Indian/Alaska Native (0.3%), and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (0.2%) backgrounds. 21.16% of students are English learners and receive free or reduced-price meals. Students enrolled in Sage Creek's Dance PE program have various levels of dance experience. This unique opportunity will allow them all to expand their knowledge and understanding through relatable teaching artists. Most of San Diego Dance Theater's (SOOT) teaching artists are proficient in two languages. Those without second-language proficiency are adept at engaging bilingual students to assist with interpretation for peers. The multi-modal nature of dance instruction provides a myriad of non-linguistic cues to help English learners participate fully. Dance training is unique in that it allows for multiple learning styles through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities, often all at the same time. Exercises are explained, demonstrated, and students repeat what they learn. Experienced teaching artists help all students adapt movement to their individual abilities. SOOT has a long history of instructing students with disabilities, including hearing impairments, missing limbs, and those in wheelchairs. SDDT's repertory addresses social issues such as homelessness, immigration, and gender. What the students learn and create will be accessible and inclusive of diverse cultures, ethnicities, incomes, abilities, and genders.
