MA/A/ [5? 435 Excavations; Excavations for all pipe lines, storm drains, culverts, etc., may consist of open trenches, short tunnels, or long tunnels, and each requires a different treatment. Soils: The material excavated usually is sand, loamy soil, granu- lar soil, clay, rock, or variations of these materials. Thoroughly Compacted: Tho term "thoroughly compacted" shall be held to mean a relative compaction of backfill equal to 95% of the compaction obtained from the soil excavated when tho same is properly dampened and compacted under a pressure of 2,000 pounds per square inch under the methods employed by the Division of Highv/ays. Criterion for Backfill; The required compaction in backfilling trenches which are to bo placed shall in all cases be sufficient, in the backfill material over and around the pipe or other structure, to render It as compact as the original gromid and the method of compact- ing will depend on the character of tho material excavated. Materials for Backfill: Granular materials, such as sand or sandy loara^ may often be compacted by the use of water in tho proper quantity, but even in materials of this kind the addition of tamping may be desirable and beneficial. Excavated material often consists of earth lumps of con- siderable size which should be pulverized and suitably dampened before being placed in the bottom of the excavation and around pipes or othor structures. Rock particles or particles of material too hard to bo melted by water shall be distributed throughout the upper portion of tho backfill and the space between them filled with fine material. Backfilling: Open Trenches: Select the best available excavated material for back- filling around tho pipe or other structure. All material shall be finely divided and if clods or lumps, which aro soluble in wator are present, thoy should bo reduced by watering. Backfill shall be carefully placed to a depth of twelve (12) inches above tho bottom of the trench when it shall be properiy wetted and then tariped by hand or other .means both over n.id nlongnide t.be pipe until thoroughly compacted. The backfill shali then proceed using four-inch (4") layers of e^u^th or othar suitable inaterial which r.hall have been d.ampened '.mtil it is of tho proper consistency to insure most effective tarping by means of hand tampers or pneumatic rammers. It is desirable that means bo taken to prevent damage to the coating over pipes during backfill, and for this reason tamping adja- cent to the pipes must be carefully done. On completion of the trench backfill, the earth shall ba crowned up over the top of the trench as high as possible and after being properly dampened, shall be rolled with a 10-ton roller or by the use of trucks w.hich hava been loaded to give equal or greater compriCtion. Flooding or Jetting; The use of flooding will be permitted only v/here the backfill material is of a sandy nature and contains no clay. Jotting will be permitted only v/hon it is proved by test that tha relative density obtained in all parts of ths com- pacted backfill is more than \)Ofo, Tunnels: Where a sxiccession of short ti.mnols is used, the lov;er portion of pillars betv/een the openings shall bo excavated down at an angle of 45° to facilitate backfilling and backfill shall be compacted by tamping or flooding as above described. Vi;'.here pillars between short tunnels are loss than six feet (G') in depth, they shall be broken through and used for backfill. In the case of long tunnels, materials shall be tamped in ovor tho tops of pipes as sections of pipe or con- duit nre laid. Long tunnels shall only be used at depths exceeding twenty foet (20'). R e pl .ac i ng ? ave ment; Wherever it becomes necessary to cut pavement for the installation of a pipe line, it shall bo replaced with an eight inch (6") pavement r.nd the material immediately under the odge of the broken pavement shall be excavated undercut- ting tha odge of the pavement sufficiently so that the lower portion of the new pavement will sxipport the edge of tho old pavement. If the pav-imont is Portland cement concrete, the entire repair shall bo made of a Class "A" concrete of not loss than six sacks of cement por cubic yard of concrete. If the pave- ment is asphaltic concrete, the lower six and one-half inches (O-T") of t.he repair p.avement sh.ell bo of Portland cement con- crete and the top one and one-half inches (l|-") shall be asphaltic concrete conforming to the type of pavement which wris cut to make the excavation.
