MEMCOR CMFS SYSTEM
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
A. Description of Work
1. This Detailed Specification Section covers the submerged continuous membrane
filtration (CMFS) equipment as supplied by US. FilterlMemcor.
2. The MF system shall consist of two (2) CMFS units (independent cells mounted
on a common skid), compressed air system, membrane cleaning (CIP) system,
backwash system, piping, valves, controls and instrumentation.
B. Coordination
1. The MFEM shall fumish the majority of equipment items associated with the MF
system and shall participate in the commissioning, startup, testing, and training of
District's personnel in operation of the MF system as a whole.
2. The Installation Contractor will unpack, assemble, and install equipment items
furnished by the MFEM as shown on the Drawings and as specified herein. In
addition, the Installation. Contractor will also furnish and install additional
equipment items, interconnecting piping, valves, instruments, power and control
wiring, and other appurtenances not furnished by the MFEM.
3. The Installation Contractor in association with the MFEM will be responsible for
acceptance testing of individual items of equipment as defined in the individual
equipment specifications. The Installation Contractor will also participate in the
startup of the MF system as described in Section 01670.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.02 EQUIPMENT DESIGN AND FABRICATION
A. General
1. The following subsystems and components are included in the MF membrane
system:
a. Two CMFS membrane units, equipment numbers M-0912-(2) consisting of
the following:
1) 84 MlOT microfiltration modules;
2) Membrane process tank;
3) Filtrate extraction pump;
4) Skid mounted piping, valves, and instrumentation;
b. All required components for installation, including but not necessarily
limited to, appropriate anchor bolts, skid-mounted piping supports,
hardware, surface preparation, and shop painting.

The MF units shall be a product of the Memcor division of U.S. Filter
Corporation.
Each unit shall contain 84 hollow fiber membrane modules. Each module shall
contain a sufficient number of fibers to provide a nominal surface area of 320
square feet based on the outside fiber diameter.
The hollow fiber membrane modules shall be polypropylene with a 0.2 micron
nominal pore size.
The membrane modules and supporting pipe work shall be designed for a direct
flow.
The units shall incorporate an aidwater backwash system to maintain filter flow
performance.
Equipment furnished under this section shall be fabricated in full conformity with
the drawings, specifications, engineering data, instructions, and recommendations of the MFEM except as modified herein.

Membrane process tanks shall be constructed of all Type 31613161, stainless steel
in a welded configuration for installation above grade. Components shall
conform to the following:
a. Plate: Stainless steel, Type 316L; ASTM A240 - Standard Specification for
Heat-Resisting Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel .Plate,
Sheet and Strip for Pressure Vessels, passivated.
b. Squares, Channels, and Angles: Stainless steel, Type 316L; ASTM A479 -
Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes for Use in
Boilers and Other Pressure Vessels, passivated.
c. Pipe: Stainless steel, welded process, Grade TP316L, Schedule 10s; ASTM
A312 - Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Austenitic
Stainless Steel Pipes, passivated.
d. Flanges: Forged stainless steel; ASTM A182 - Standard Specification for
Forged or Rolled Alloy-Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged Fittings, and Valves and
Parts for High-Temperature Service, Grade F316, lap joint flange with
stainless steel stub end, ASTM A240 - Standard Specification for Heat-
Resisting Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and
Strip for Pressure Vessels, Type 316L, welded grade conforming to MSS
SP-43 - Wrought Stainless Steel Butt-welding Fittings; schedule to match
pipe.
Plate shall be a minimum 3/16-inch thick.
All welding shall be conducted in accordance with AWS D.6 - Structural
Welding Code-Stainless Steel. All welding operators shall be qualified in
accordance with current AWS requirements.
The direct current, straight polarity, gas tungsten-arc (GTAW) process shall be
used for all welding.
The method of fabrication shall be continuous fillet and bevel welds. Stitch or
spot welding is not permitted.
Passivate all finished welds following fabrication.
The strength of the welds shall meet or exceed the strength of the structural shape
or tubing material.
All interior and external welds shall be ground smooth.
The tanks shall include all necessary support assemblies and components for the
membrane module cassettes and related piping and appurtenant equipment.

10. The tanks shall be designed for anchorage to a concrete equipment pad. The tank
shall be designed to resist the gravitational and seismic forces of the module
assemblies, piping, and other related equipment supported from the structure
when full. The tank and all anchorages shall be designed to be in conformance
with the latest edition of the Uniform Building Code for Seismic Zone 4, with a
seismic importance factor of 1.0. The MFEM shall submit calculations
documenting compliance with these requirements.
D. MF Module Assemblies
1. The membrane modules shall be designed for direct flow operation. Feed shall
enter through the membrane exterior face and filtrate shall exit through the upper
end cap.
2. The modules shall be Memcor MlOT. Modules shall be arranged in manifolded
assemblies of 4 modules each.
3. Each assembly shall be supported by a stainless steel framework in a vertical
orientation for submersion-In the membrane process tank. All seals shall be
EPDM.
4. Eighty-four (84) modules shall be incorporated in each unit. The modules shall
be connected in manifolded racks of 28 modules each and supported from the
membrane process tank framework.
5. Each module shall be tested at the factory. A certified test report organized by
module serial number shall be forwarded to the District a minimum 30 days prior
to shipment of the modules to the site. The District reserves the right to have a
representative present to witness the testing.
E. Membrane Backwash System
1. The membrane units shall incorporate provisions for a combined aidwater
backwashlflush sequence.
2. Filtrate produced by the membrane units shall be pumped in a reverse flow
configuration through the hollow fibers while course air is introduced to the base
of the modules to agitate the membrane surface. The concentrated backwash
solution shall be drained from the membrane process tank to waste and the basin
refilled.
3. The backwash cycle for each unit shall be sequenced and controlled automatically
through the PLC.
4. The compressed air system supplying compressed air for the aeration portion of
the cycle and for pneumatic actuated valves on the MF unit will be provided by
the MFEM. See Article 2.03-B, Compressed Air System.

5. The compressed air system within the MF units shall include the following:
a. A control air manifold which supplies compressed air to solenoid valves for
control of automatic process valves;
b. A stainless steel pipework connection to supply process air to the modules.
6. All pneumatic tubing to on-skid valves shall be Type 316 stainless steel. The use
of plastic tubing will not be allowed.
F. Filtrate Extraction System
1. Filtrate shall be extracted through the membrane modules by a vacuum induced
on the filtrate side of the hollow fibers by the unit extraction pump. The
extraction pump shall also be used to circulate membrane backwash and cleaning
solutions.
2. The system shall include an air separation system incorporating an eductor unit.
3. Design and operating requirements for components of the filtrate extraction
system are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
4. Requirements for the extraction pumps are specified in Section 11214.
G. Instrumentation and Controls
1. Each MF unit shall be equipped with the following:

coated, steel core liquid tight conduit, or cable tray with wiring secured by nylon
ties. See Section 16100 for requirements.

H. Access Provisions
1. The shd assembly shall be furnished complete with all required provisions to
access the membrane cells, including ladders, walkways, module removal gantry
and associated appurtenances.
I. Piping
1. The membrane units and ancillary system equipment shall be arranged on a
hydraulic skid assembly incorporating the membrane process tanks, extraction
pumps, backwash supply tank, cleaning tank and cleaning chemical dosing
systems. Cleaning chemical dosing tanks may be located adjacent to the skid at
the option of the MFEM.
2. The MFEM shall provide all piping integral to the skid assembly to terminations
at the envelope of the skid. The Installation Contractor will supply all
interconnecting pipe work to terminal flanges outside the skid envelope.
3. All termination points shall be flanged ANSI Class 150 in sizes 2-inches and
larger; or NPT pipe threaded in sizes less than 2-inches.
4. Terminations shall be provided for the services listed below. Pipe sizes at the
points of connection shall be per the MFEM” design.
a. MF feed inlet.
b. RO permeate fill inlet.
c. MF filtrate outlet.
d. MF filter-to-waste outlet.
e. Membrane process tank concentrate drain outlet.
f. Cyclic process air inlet.
g. MF control air inlet.
5. Piping materials for each service shall be per the MFEMs design. See
requirements for candidate piping systems in Division 15.
J. Valves
1. For a list of automatic flow valves to be furnished on each unit, see Supplement
4.01-B, Valve Schedules.

2.03 EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS
A. Feed Delivery System
1. The feed delivery system includes the MF feed pump station; automatic strainers;
interconnecting piping, valves, instrumentation and controls.
2. Design and operating requirements for components of the feed delivery system
are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
3. Requirements for the MF feed pumps are specified in Section 11213.
4. Requirements for the automatic strainers are specified in Section 11340.
B. Compressed Air System
1. The compressed air system shall consist of two separate subsystems: a process air
blower system and control air compressor system.
2. The process air blower system shall consist of the following: two aeration blowers
with inlet filter assemblies; interconnecting piping, valves, instrumentation and
controls.
3. The control air system shall consist of the following: two air compressors with
integral dryers and outlet filters; two supply air filter assemblies; one air receiver
with accessories; one control air regulator assembly; one process air regulator
assembly; interconnecting piping, valves, instrumentation and controls.
4. The process air blower system shall be suitable for supply to the membrane
process aeration system.
5. The compressed air system shall be suitable for supply of control air used for the
pneumatically operated valves furnished with the MF system.

6. Design and operating requirements for components of the compressed air system
are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
7. Components of the control air compressed air system are specified in Section
11370.
8. Components of the process air blower system are specified in Section 11375.
C. Membrane Cleaning System
1. The cleaning system shall include a CIP solution tank and accessories, citric acid
dose system, Memclean C dose system, sodium hydroxide dose system;
interconnecting piping, valves, instrumentation and controls.
2. Design and operating requirements for components of the membrane cleaning
system are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
3. The CIP tank is specified will be integral to the system hydraulic skid and share a
common wall with the backwash supply tank. Tank material and construction
requirements shall be as specified for the membrane process tanks.
4. Cleaning chemical dosing systems are specified in Section 11240 and related system sections.
5. Valves
a. For a list of automatic flow valves to be supplied by the MFEM, see
Supplement 4.01-B, Valve Schedules.
b. In addition to the valves listed in Supplement 4.01-B, the h4FEM shall

a. Cleaning of individual MF units shall be manually initiated but
automatically controlled thereafter through the PLC. Cleaning solutions
shall be made up of RO permeate and the appropriate cleaning chemicals.
Tank charging shall be conducted automatically through the PLC.

Membrane Backwash System
1. The backwash system shall consist of a storage tank, interconnecting piping,
valves, instrumentation and controls.
2. Design and operating requirements for components of the backwash system are
included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
3. The backwash storage tank shall share a common wall with the CIP tank and meet
fabrication and materials requirements for the membrane tanks as herein
specified.
4. Valves
a. For a list of automatic flow valves to be supplied by the MFEM, see
Supplement 4.01-B, Valve Schedules.
b. In addition to the valves listed in Supplement 4.01-B, the h4FEM shall

2.05 SPARE PARTS
A. A list of recommended spare parts and all special tools required for normal operation
and maintenance of all components furnished by the MFEM shall be submitted for
approval within sixty (60) days following Notice to Proceed. All items on this list shall
be furnished prior to the beginning of preoperational tests. The list shall include items
specified hereinbefore and the following additional items as a minimum:

PALL SYSTEM
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
A. Description of Work
1. This Detailed Specification Section covers the hollow fiber membrane filtration
treatment system equipment as supplied by Pall Corporation.
2. The MF system shall consist of two (2) 22-2-2-316L MF units, compressed air
system, membrane cleaning (CP) system, membrane backwashlreverse filtration
system, excess feed recirculation system, piping, valves, controls and
instrumentation,
B. Coordination
1. The MFEM shall furnish the majority of equipment items associated with the MF
system and shall participate in the commissioning, startup, testing, and training of
District's personnel in operation of the MF system as a whole.
2. The Installation Contractor will unpack, assemble, and install equipment items
furnished by the MFEM as shown on the Drawings and as specified herein. In
addition, the Installation Contractor will also furnish and install additional
equipment items, interconnecting piping, valves, instruments, power and control
wiring, and other appurtenances not furnished by the MFEM.
3. The Installation Contractor in association with the MFEM will be responsible for
acceptance testing of individual items of equipment as defined in the individual
equipment specifications. The Installation Contractor will also participate in the
startup of the MF system as described in Section 01670.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 PROCESS SYSTEM DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE

2.02 EQUIPMENT DESIGN AND FABRICATION
A. General
1. The following subsystems and components are included in the MF membrane
system:
a. Two 22-2-2-316L MF units, equipment numbers M-0912-(2) consisting of
the following:
1) 38 USV-6203 microfiltration modules;
2) Module support kame;
3) Skid mounted piping, valves, and instrumentation;
4) Electrical control panel (equipment numbers CP-0912-(2)); and
pneumatic control panel (equipment numbers CP-0911-4-(2)).
b. All required components for installation, including but not necessarily
limited to, appropriate anchor bolts, skid-mounted piping supports,
hardware, surface preparation, and shop painting.
B. Membrane System Requirements

The MF units shall be a product of the Pall Trinity Micro Division of Pall
Corporation.
Each unit shall contain 38 hollow fiber membrane modules. Each module shall
contain a sufficient number of fibers to provide a nominal surface area of 50
square meters based on the outside fiber diameter.
The hollow fiber membrane modules shall be polyvinylidene fluoride with a 0.1
micron nominal pore size.
The membrane modules and supporting pipe work shall be designed for a cross
flow configuration.
The units shall incorporate a primary filtrate reverse flow backwash and
secondary air scrub system to maintain filter flow performance.
Equipment furnished under this section shall be fabricated in full conformity with
the drawings, specifications, engineering data, instructions, and recommendations
of the MFEM except as modified herein.

C. Support Structure
1. All pressure vessels, piping, valves, instrumentation, control panels, and other
appurtenances which make up a single MF unit shall be supported on a single
structural frame. The frame shall be of fabricated carbon steel construction and
shall have a surface finish comprising a zinc primer, an epoxy coating and final
coat of urethane.
2. The frame shall be sized to accommodate the installed modules and related
appurtenant equipment, plus space for the future installation of an additional four
membrane modules.
3. The support frame shall be designed to resist the gravitational and seismic forces
of the pressure vessels, piping, and other related equipment supported from the
structure. The frame shall be designed to be in conformance with the latest
edition of the Uniform Building Code for Seismic Zone 4, with a seismic
importance factor of 1.0. The MFEM shall submit calculations documenting
compliance with these requirements.
D. MF Module Assemblies
1. The membrane modules shall be designed for cross flow operation. Feed shall
enter through the lower end ports and filtrate shall exit through the upper end
connection while excess recircualtion (crossflow) shall exit through the upper
connection in the side of the module pressure vessel wall.
2. The modules shall be Pall USV-6203. Module housings shall be constructed of
polyvinyl chloride, with stainless steel lower end cap.
3. The membrane modules shall be supported by a steel framework in a vertical
orientation. The modules shall be connected to their manifolds with grooved pipe
couplings and slip joint connectors. All seals shall be EPDM.
4. Thirty-eight (38) modules shall be incorporated in each unit. The modules shall
be connected in manifolded blocks and supported by the MF unit framework.
5. Modules for each block shall be tested at the factory. A certified test report
organized by module serial number shall be forwarded to the District a minimum
30 days prior to shipment of the modules to the site. The District reserves the
right to have a representative present to witness the testing.
6. Each block, once fully piped and assembled, shall be tested at the MFEM's
facility using dummy modules. This testing shall incorporate a leak check to
verify the integrity of the welded and bolted connections and will be repeated in
the field using the actual modules. The field testing shall incorporate a pressure

decay test hnction to verify the integrity of the membrane fibers installed in each
module. The MFEM shall furnish a certificate certifying the integrity of each 38
module block for each unit furnished prior to shipment. The District reserves the
right to have a representative present to witness the testing.
E. Reverse Filtration (RF) and Air Scrub (AS) Backwash
1. The MF units shall utilize a reverse flow back flush to remove accumulated
particulate and maintain the design filtrate production rate. Process effluent at a
pressure of roughly 20 - 40 psig shall be introduced into the filtrate side of the
fibers at a rate of 20 gpm per module, flushing dislodged solids to waste.
2. In addition, the units shall incorporate an AS sequence to periodically agitate the
exterior fiber surface. Process air shall be introduced at the bottom of the module
on the outside of the fibers coupled with a feed cross flow of 10 gpm per module.
Dislodged solids shall be diverted to waste.
3. The RF and AS cycles shall be initiated through the PLC control system at fixed
time intervals. The RF and AS processes shall be carried out automatically
through the PLC. Design cycle time for each sequence shall be 22.4 minutes,
maximum.
4. The compressed air system supplying compressed air for the AS cycle and for
pneumatic actuated valves on the MF unit will be provided by the MFEM. See
Article 2.03-B, Compressed Air System.
5. The compressed air system within the MF units shall include the following:
a. A control air manifold which supplies compressed air to solenoid valves for
control of automatic process valves;
b. A stainless steel pipework connection to supply process air to the modules.
6. All pneumatic tubing to on-skid valves shall be Type 316 stainless steel. The use
of plastic tubing will not be allowed.
F. Instrumentation and Controls
1. Each MF unit shall be equipped with the following:
a. Control enclosure containing the MF unit PLC and related equipment.
b. Pneumatic assembly for mounting solenoid valves for the on-skid pneumatic
valve operators and related equipment.
c. Pressure indicating transmitters on the feed manifold.

d. Feed magnetic flow meter.
e. Excess feed magnetic flow meter.
2. All control, power, and instrument wiring external to unit electrical panels shall
be run in PVC coated rigid galvanized steel conduit and fittings, flexible PVC
coated, steel core liquid tight conduit, or cable tray with wiring secured by nylon
ties. See Section 16100 for requirements.
G. Piping
1. Piping interfaces on the MF units shall be designed such that the two units can be
arranged in a single row and connected on common interconnecting pipe
manifolds.
2. The MFEM shall provide all piping integral to the MF units to terminations at the
envelope of the support framework. The Installation Contractor will supply all
interconnecting pipe work to terminal flanges outside the unit envelope.
3. All termination points shall be flanged ANSI Class 150 in sizes 2-inches and
larger; or NF'T pipe threaded in sizes less than 2-inches.
4. Terminations shall be provided for the services listed below. Pipe sizes at the
points of connection shall be per the MFEM's design.
a. MF feed inlet.
b. RF inlet.
c. MF filtrate outlet.
d. EF outlet.
e. ASRF waste outlet (two terminations per unit).
f. AS process air inlet.
g. MF control air inlet.
h. MF cleaning solution inlet.
i. MF cleaning solution outlet.
5. Piping materials for each service shall be per the MFEMs design. See
requirements for candidate piping systems in Division 15.

2.03 EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS
A. Feed Delivery System
1. The feed delivery system includes the MF feed pump station; automatic strainers;
interconnecting piping, valves, instrumentation and controls.
2. Design and operating requirements for components of the feed delivery system
are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
3. Requirements for the MF feed pumps are specified in Section 11213.
4. Requirements for the automatic strainers are specified in Section 11340.
B. Compressed Air System
1. The compressed air system shall consist of two air compressors with integral
dryers and outlet filters; two supply air filter assemblies; one air receiver with
accessories; one process air regulator assembly; one control air regulator
assembly; two MF unit mounted pneumatic control assemblies; interconnecting
piping, valves, instrumentation and controls.
2. The compressed air system shall be suitable for supply of process air used in the
compressed air scrub system for the MF units and control air used for the
pneumatically operated valves furnished with the MF system.
3. Design and operating requirements for components of the compressed air system
are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.

tank heater control panel, heaters and controls, citric acid dose system, sodium
hypochlorite dose system, sodium hydroxide dose system, instrumentation,
interconnecting piping and valves.

SECTION 11308
ZENON SYSTEM
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
A. Description of Work
1. This Detailed Specification Section covers the hollow fiber membrane filtration
treatment system equipment as supplied by Zenon Environmental Systems, Inc.
2. The MF system shall consist of two (2) ZeeWeed MF units, compressed air
system, membrane cleaning (CIP) system, membrane backpulse system,
membrane maintenance cleddeconcentration system, piping, valves, controls
and instrumentation.
B. Coordination
1. The MFEM shall furnish the majority of equipment items associated with the MF
system and shall participate in the commissioning, startup, testing, and training of
District’s personnel in operation of the MF system as a whole.
2. The Installation Contractor will unpack, assemble, and install equipment items
furnished by the MFEM as shown on the Drawings and as specified herein. In
addition, the Installation Contractor will also furnish and install additional
equipment items, interconnecting piping, valves, instruments, power and control
wiring, and other appurtenances not furnished by the MFEM.
3. The Installation Contractor in association with the MFEM will be responsible for
acceptance testing of individual items of equipment as defined in the individual
equipment specifications. The Installation Contractor will also participate in the
startup of the MF system as described in Section 01670.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.02 EQUIPMENT DESIGN AND FABRICATION
A. General
1. The following subsystems and components are included in the MF membrane
system:
a. Two ZeeWeed MF units, equipment numbers M-0912-(2) consisting of the
following:
1) , 40 ZW-650 microfiltration modules;
2) Membrane process tank,
3) Filtrate extraction pump;
4) Skid mounted piping, valves, and instrumentation;
5) Electrical control panel (equipment numbers CP-0912-(2)).
b. All required components for installation, including but not necessarily
limited to, appropriate anchor bolts, skid-mounted piping supports,
hardware, surface preparation, and shop painting.
B. Membrane System Requirements

The MF units shall be a product of Zenon Environmental, Inc.
Each unit shall contain 40 hollow fiber membrane modules. Each module shall
contain a sufficient number of fibers to provide a nominal surface area of 650
square feet based on the outside fiber diameter.
The hollow fiber membrane modules shall be a polymeric fluorocarbon derivative
membrane (manufacturer’s designation OCP) with a 0.035 micron nominal pore
size.
The membrane modules and supporting pipe work shall be designed for a cross
flow configuration in a plug flow arrangement.
The units shall incorporate a primary filtrate backpulse and secondary
maintenance cleddeconcentration system to maintain filter flow performance.

6. Equipment hmished under this section shall be fabricated in full conformity with
the drawings, specifications, engineering data, instructions, and recommendations
of the MFEM except as modified herein.
C. Membrane Process Tanks

Membrane process tanks shall be constructed of all Type 3 1613 16L stainless steel
in a welded configuration for installation above grade. Components shall
conform to the following:
a. Plate: Stainless steel, Type 316L; ASTM A240 - Standard Specification for
Heat-Resisting Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate,
Sheet and Strip for Pressure Vessels, passivated.
b. Squares, Channels, and Angles: Stainless steel, Type 316L; ASTM A479 -
Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes for Use in
Boilers and Other Pressure Vessels, passivated.
c. Pipe: Stainless steel, welded process, Grade TP316L, Schedule 10s; ASTM
A312 - Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Austenitic
Stainless Steel Pipes, passivated.
d. Flanges: Forged stainless steel; ASTM A182 - Standard Specification for
Forged or Rolled Alloy-Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged Fittings, and Valves and
Parts for High-Temperature Service, Grade F316, lap joint flange with
stainless steel stub end, ASTM A240 - Standard Specification for Heat-
Resisting Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and
Strip for Pressure Vessels, Type 316L, welded grade conforming to MSS
SP-43 - Wrought Stainless Steel Butt-welding Fittings; schedule to match
pipe.
Plate shall be a minimum 3/16-inch thick.
All welding shall be conducted in accordance with AWS D.6 - Structural
Welding Code-Stainless Steel. All welding operators shall be qualified in
accordance with current AWS requirements.
The direct current, straight polarity, gas tungsten-arc (GTAW) process shall be
used for all welding.
The method of fabrication shall be continuous fillet and bevel welds. Stitch or
spot welding is not permitted.
Passivate all finished welds.

7. The strength of the welds shall meet or exceed the strength of the structural shape
or tubing material.
8. All interior and external welds shall be ground smooth.
9. The tanks shall include all necessary support assemblies and components for the
membrane module cassettes and related piping and appurtenant equipment.
10. The tanks shall be designed for anchorage to a concrete equipment pad. The tank
shall be designed to resist the gravitational and seismic forces of the module
assemblies, piping, and other related equipment supported from the structure
when full. The tank and all anchorages shall be designed to be in conformance
with the latest edition of the Uniform Building Code for Seismic Zone 4, with a
seismic importance factor of 1.0. The MFEM shall submit calculations
documenting compliance with these requirements.
D. MF Module Assemblies
1. The membrane modules shall be designed for cross flow operation. Feed shall
enter through the membrane exterior face and filtrate shall exit through the upper
end connection while excess feed (crossflow) shall continue through the
membrane process tank and portion will overtlow to waste.
2. The modules shall be ZeeWeed ZW-650. Modules shall be arranged in cassette
assemblies with eight modules per cassette.
3. Each cassette shall be supported by a stainless steel framework in a vertical
orientation for submersion in the membrane process tank. All seals shall be
EPDM.
4. Forty (40) modules shall be incorporated in each unit. The modules shall be
connected in manifolded cassettes and supported from the membrane process tank
framework.
5. Modules for each cassette shall be tested at the factory. A certified test report
organized by module serial number shall be forwarded to the District a minimum
30 days prior to shipment of the modules to the site. The District reserves the
right to have a representative present to witness the testing.
6. The MFEM shall furnish a certificate providing the serial number and square
footage of membrane in each module for the project. No module shall have a
deviation in membrane area of more than ? 2 percent.

1. The units shall be provided with an aeration system to assist in preventing particle
adherence to the surface of the membranes.
2. Course air bubbles shall flow from the bottom of the membrane modules creating
turbulence to scour and clean the outside surface of the membrane modules.
3. Cycles of process aeration shall be sequenced and controlled automatically
through the PLC.
4. The compressed air system supplying compressed air for the cyclic membrane
aeration system and for pneumatic actuated valves on the MF unit will be
provided by the MFEM. See Article 2.03-A, Compressed Air System.
5. The compressed air system within the MF units shall include the following:
a. A control air manifold which supplies compressed air to solenoid valves for
control of automatic process valves;
b. A stainless steel pipework connection to supply process air to the modules.
6. All pneumatic tubing to on-skid valves shall be Type 316 stainless steel. The use
of plastic tubing will not be allowed.
F. Filtrate Extraction System

Filtrate shall be extracted through the membrane modules by a vacuum induced
on the filtrate side of the hollow fibers by the unit extraction pump. The
extraction pump shall also be used to circulate membrane backpulse and cleaning
solutions.
The system shall include an air separator tank and liquid ring vacuum pumping
system.
Design and operating requirements for components of the filtrate extraction
system are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
Requirements for the extraction pumps are specified in Section 11214.
Requirements for the vacuum pumps are specified in Section 11215.
Air Separator Tank:
a. Vessel construction shall comply with the requirements of the ASME Boiler
and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Code U Stamp.
b. Vessel shall be constructed of all Type 3 16L stainless steel.

c. The vessel exterior shall be glass bead blasted after fabrication. Interior and
exterior surfaces shall be passivated.
d. In addition to required process connections, vessel shall be provided with
drain, vent, and gauge outlets, minimum 1/2-inch NF'T.
G. Membrane Backpulse System
1. The MF units shall utilize a reverse flow back flush to remove accumulated
particulate and maintain the design filtrate production rate. Process effluent at a
pressure of roughly 20 - 40 psig shall be introduced into the filtrate side of the
fibers at a rate of 12.5 gpm per module, flushing dislodged solids from the
membrane surface.
2. The backpulse cycles shall be initiated through the PLC control system at fixed
time intervals. The cycles shall be carried out automatically through the PLC.
The design backpulse interval shall be 15 minutes, maximum.
H. Maintenance CleanDeconcentration System
1. A secondary maintenance cleaddeconcentration cycle shall be periodically
employed to increase the interval between required unit CIP cycles.
2. The basic cycle shall include an extended backpulse of maintenance cleaning
solution without aeration. During this period, 50 percent of the membrane
process tank volume shall be drained to waste (deconcentration).
3. Maintenance cleaning solutions shall include alternately 250 ppm sodium
hypochlorite solution and 0.2 percent citric acid solution. Both solutions shall be
prepared using permeate makeup water fkom the RO system.
4. All portions of the maintenance cleddeconcentration cycle, including solution
makeup, shall be carried out automatically through the PLC. The design
maintenance clean interval shall be minimum 3 times per week.
I. Access Provisions
1. The skid assembly shall be furnished complete with all required provisions to
access the membrane cells, including ladders, walkways, module removal gantry
and associated appurtenances.
J. Instrumentation and Controls
1. Each MF unit shall be equipped with the following:

be run in PVC coated rigid galvanized steel conduit and fittings, flexible PVC
coated, steel core liquid tight conduit, or cable tray with wiring secured by nylon
ties. See Section 16100 for requirements.
K. Piping
1. Piping interfaces on the MF units shall be designed such that the two membrane
process tanks and associated filtrate extraction equipment can be arranged in a
single row and connected on common interconnecting pipe manifolds.
2. The MFEM shall provide all piping integral to the MF units to terminations at the
envelope of the membrane process tank, including components of the filtrate
extraction system. The Installation Contractor will supply all interconnecting
pipe work to terminal flanges outside the unit envelope.
3. All termination points shall be flanged ANSI Class 150 in sizes 2-inches and
larger; or NPT pipe threaded in sizes less than 2-inches.
4. Terminations shall be provided for the services listed below. Pipe sizes at the
points of connection shall be per the MFEM's design.

B. Compressed Air System
1. The compressed air system shall consist of two separate subsystems: a process air
blower system and control air compressor system.
2. The process air blower system shall consist of the following: three aeration
blowers with inlet filter assemblies; interconnecting piping, valves,
instrumentation and controls.
3. The control air system shall consist of the following: two air compressors with
integral dryers and outlet filters; two supply air filter assemblies; one air receiver
with accessories; one control air regulator assembly; interconnecting piping,
valves, instrumentation and controls.
4. The process air blower system shall be suitable for supply to the membrane cyclic
aeration system.
5. The compressed air system shall be suitable for supply of control air used for the
pneumatically operated valves furnished with the MF system.
6. Design and operating requirements for components of the compressed air system
are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.
7. Components of the control air compressed air system are specified in Section
11370.
8. Components of the process air blower system are specified in Section 11375.
C. Membrane Cleaning System
1. The cleaning system shall include a CIP solution tank and accessories, citric acid
dose system, sodium hypochlorite dose system, sodium hydroxide dose system;
interconnecting piping, valves, instrumentation and controls.
2. Cleaning system components shall be used for both the in basin recovery clean
operations as well as the periodic maintenance cleddeconcentration cycle.
3. Design and operating requirements for components of the membrane cleaning
system are included in Supplement 4.01-A, Process Equipment Schedules.

a. Maintenance cleaning of individual MF units shall be automatically initiated
and controlled through the PLC. Recovery cleans shall be manually
initiated but automatically controlled thereafter through the PLC. Cleaning
solutions shall be made up of RO permeate and the appropriate cleaning
chemicals. Tank charging shall be conducted automatically through the
PLC .

Membrane Backpulse System
1. The backpulse system shall consist of a backpulse storage tank, sodium
hypochlorite dosing system, interconnecting piping, valves, instrumentation and
controls.

3. The backpulse storage tank is specified in Section 11250.
4. Components of the sodium hypochlorite dosing system are specified in Sections

2.05 SPARE PARTS
A. A list of recommended spare parts and all special tools required for normal operation

be furnished prior to the beginning of preoperational tests. The list shall include items
