Thank you so much for the opportunity to purchase Shipley Family papers and documents for the
Carlsbad City Library, Carlsbad History Collection.
This collection provides a glimpse into life in late 19* and early 20* century Carlsbad. The items
illustrate the activities of the Shipley family through different media and demonstrate how the family
connected to individuals, families, community, and the wider world. This letter confirms your intent to
sell to the City of Carlsbad (City) those items listed in Exhibit A Shipley Inventory List, 2013 and the
City's intent to buy those items in Exhibit A for the sum of Six Thousand Dollars ($6,000) (hereinafter,
the "Agreement"). By signing this Letter Agreement you are warranting that you are the lawful owner of
the items listed on Exhibit A Shipley Inventory List, 2013, that the items are authentic, and that you have
the sole right to sell these items, listed in Exhibit A, to the City of Carlsbad. If this arrangement and
Agreement is acceptable, please indicate with your signature below and retum to me at your earliest
convenience.
Thank you for your interest in helping us document Carlsbad's unique and diverse history. The City is very
excited for the opportunity to obtain these materials and appreciates your consideration of the Carlsbad
History Collection as the appropriate location to share Florence Shipley Magee's contribution to Carlsbad's
history.

Exhibit A Shipley Inventory List, 2013
1. 22 property deeds for Carlsbad land- the earliest is from 1888 and is signed by John
Frazier and Gerhard Schutte; includes deed for the purchase of the Samuel Church Smith
house (now the Magee House) by Alexander Shipley and signed by Church and his wife
Louisa, 1896; some items on Carlsbad Land and Water Co. letterhead
2. Hand drawn interior house plans for the Shipley's house (now the Magee House) in a
blank accounting book, along with other notes about the house
3. 3 composition style books (two hardbound, one soft cover) containing Florence's school
work and grades, circa 1898
4. 2 large format photographs: one of the original Carlsbad Hotel buming and one of its
aftermath, 1896; photographs taken by Clinton Culver
5. Hugh Magee and Florence Shipley's wedding photograph in front of the Mission, 1912
6. Alexander Shipley's day books with joumal entries, 1920s
7. Box with Alexander Shipley's calling cards and six engraving plates for calling cards
8. Alexander Shipley's will
9. 19 Fire insurance policies on various Shipley property, 1930s - 1940s
10. 416 photographs, plus two portraits in frames
11. Magee court papers from dispute between heirs
12. Alexander and Florence Shipley's genealogy research, including letters, family trees,

In addition, any and all other items appropriate to the Carlsbad History Collection subsequently
identified by Mr. Roger Walwick as having belonged to Florence Shipley Magee and her family.
