Discussion
Fall Arts Season Brochure
The inaugural fall season brochure was released and distributed in early October to city locations and mailed to the
arts patrons’ database. Response has been very positive. Cultural Arts staff is currently working on the spring arts
brochure which is scheduled to be released in mid-December.
Front Row Fridays
In response to community feedback during the Arts & Culture Master Plan including significant interest in greater
interaction with artists, the Cultural Arts team created a new performing arts series titled Front Row Fridays,
scheduled on the second Friday of each month. The series kicked off on Friday, October 12th in the Schulman
Auditorium with a season preview by the San Diego Ballet. Narrated by San Diego Ballet Artistic Director Javier
Velasco, the evening included excerpts from five upcoming productions including the world premiere of a new ballet
based on The Jungle Book which was performed October 19-21 in San Diego. In addition to the performance, Velasco
offered insights on terminology, training and choreography. With over 160 in attendance, the evening was capped
off by a lively Q&A with Velasco and six dancers. The evening concluded with an unexpected interactive experience
for the children in the audience who were invited onstage to learn several ballet positions and be photographed
with the dancers. The next Front Row Friday is November 9th featuring Missy Anderson, a blues, soul and R&B vocalist
accompanied by her husband, Heine Andersen. Curtain time is 7:00 p.m.
Sculpture Garden Exhibition
On Sunday, October 21, a new exhibition in the Carlsbad Sculpture Garden by Ron Tatro opened with an artist
reception attended by over 70 guests from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exhibition, entitled Ron Tatro: 7 Heads, is a
selection of new welded metal works. Tatro, an internationally known sculptor, has created a singular intersection
between welded steel and color. This exhibition, expressly created for the Sculpture Garden, features seven of his
most recent series, human head forms, welded and then painted. Although he uses a limited color palette, his lasting
interest in paint then provides a vibrant element to contrast the natural setting. The sculpture garden will be open
for this exhibition Monday- Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Oct. 22 to August 2019.
William D. Cannon Gallery
The current exhibit, Beloved Object, closes on November 11th. The 2019 Juried Biennial Exhibit opens December 1
with a reception from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Guest jurors Robert Pincus and Maria Mingalone selected 60 works by
44 artists. The exhibit runs from December 2 to January 13, 2019.
Foreign Film Fridays
Recent films were the Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman (2017), a drama from Chile, with attendance of 310 and A
Taxi Driver (2017), a South Korean drama, with attendance of 325. Upcoming films are the United Kingdom comedy
Finding Your Feet (2017) on Friday, November 2nd and Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), a docudrama from France
on Friday, November 16th.
Community Arts Grants 2019
The deadline for the current cycle of the Community Arts Grants is Monday, November 5th. The two information
sessions and a grants workshop were attended by 40 applicants. The Cultural Arts Office offered a draft review to
any interested applicants; sixteen grants proposals were submitted for staff review. Feedback focused on clarity,
structure and the strength of the proposal’s storytelling; all draft applicants received feedback by Monday, October
29th. Grant panelists are currently being recruited with three sessions planned for the week of November 26th. The
funding plan will be presented to the Arts Commission at the December 6th meeting.
