Discussion
Rhythm & Blues Take Centerstage at Front Row Fridays
On Friday, November 9, an audience of 160 experienced the distinctive musical stylings of Missy Andersen
and her accompanist/husband, Heine Andersen. Until recently with a move to New Mexico, this local duo
presented a spirited evening of rhythm & blues and soul selections that captivated a diverse audience
with their talents and humorous insights. Showcasing Missy's gospel-tinged vocals and Heine's Blues &
Americana inspired guitar work, crowd-pleasing selections included an inspirational version of Marvin
Gay’s What’s Going On and a rousing finale with Jackie Wilson’s Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher. Front
Row Fridays, presented on the second Friday of each month, offers experiences in a variety of performing
arts genres, with each artist offering insight into their world during these engaging, free events. On Friday,
December 14 at 7:00 p.m., a piano duo, Anna Grigorian and Natasha Gubenko, will perform a seasonal
and festive repertoire including The Nutcracker and selections by Debussy and Tchaikovsky.
William D. Cannon Gallery
The 2019 Juried Biennial Exhibit opened December 1 with a reception from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. An artist
breakfast was held in the morning of December 1 providing the selected artists with a sneak preview of
the exhibit. Guest jurors Robert Pincus, a renowned art critic and writer for the San Diego Union Tribune,
and Maria Mingalone, the Executive Director of the Oceanside Museum of Art, selected 60 works by 46
artists. The exhibit runs from December 2 to January 13, 2019.
Three-Part Art Program
Three-Part Art during the the Beloved Object exhibit provided a gallery tour and a hands-on art project to
45 elementary classes with 1,096 students from various grade levels. Six adult/teen tours were also
conducted. The next Three-Part Art program will coincide with the upcoming Art of the Aloha Shirt exhibit
from January 27 to March 16, 2019.
Foreign Film Fridays
November foreign films were Finding Your Feet, a romantic comedy from the United Kingdom (2017), with
attendance of 317 and Diving Bell and the Butterfly, a docudrama from France (2007), with attendance of
310. Upcoming films are the United Kingdom comedy Hunt for the Wilderpeople, an adventure comedy
from New Zealand (2016), on Friday, December 7 and Babette’s Feast (1987), a drama from Denmark, on
Friday, December 21.
Community Arts Grants 2019
The Cultural Arts Office conducted three days of Community Arts Grants panels from Tuesday, November
27 through Thursday, November 29 at Dove and Cole Libraries. Twelve members of the community and
city staff served on one of the three panels to review 31 project applications from local arts organizations
and schools. With $77,000 available for funding, proposals ranged from staging a West Coast premiere
of a new musical and bringing guests artists into schools to capacity building efforts to strengthen the
infrastructure of Carlsbad-based arts organizations. In addition to submitting an e-application, applicants
had the option to stage a brief presentation or performance for the panelists. The panels’
recommendations will be reviewed and presented to the Arts Commission for approval on Thursday,
December 6.
Recruitment Update
After interviewing three finalists, a preferred candidate was selected for the Community Arts Coordinator
position. We are currently working with HR to facilitate the hiring and onboarding process. It is anticipated
that this new Cultural Arts team member will start in January 2019.
