Seattle Arts Commission
2016 Work Plan
2016 will be a year of capacity building and advocacy for the Seattle Arts Commission. As advisors and
arts stewards, our focus will increase on key issues facing our city; racial justice, economic
development, education, livability and affordability. The Seattle Arts Commission will also continue
the foundation it has built of using a racial equity lens to do our work while expanding that focus into
new funding opportunities and content areas.
With an additional 10 percent admissions tax being dedicated to ARTS, and with the impending move
to King Street Station, the Seattle Arts Commission has the unique opportunity to lead the City
through continuing community engagement, equity actions and cultural space preservation, for the
benefit of all Seattle residents.
Advocacy
• Create a legislative Agenda (Local/Regional/National) / Policy Agenda
• Be at the table for the livability conversation across the city – Work on HALA
alignment/Homelessness and Social Justice
• Develop a partnership with the new Office of Planning and Community Development as a way to
embed arts in neighborhood planning
• Increase Seattle’s visibility as an arts city by anchoring King Street Station as a model for diverse
community arts space
Community Development and Outreach
• Act as a focus group for Cultural Access Washington (CAWA), specifically working to increase
visibility of the initiative to small to mid-sized art organizations.
• Work with ArtsFund and Leadership Tomorrow in training people for board and commission
participation.
• Continue to ask artists to present each month at Seattle Arts Commission meetings
• Work to garner increased media coverage of the arts
Facilities and Economic Development
• Serve as the bridge between the community and the Office by brainstorming and convening the
appropriate community stakeholders for outreach and engagement related to King Street
Station
• Host a Square Feet/ King Street Station joint convening
• Use King Street Station as a model to establish cultural space development values in Seattle
Public Art Advisory Committee
• Review the public art process from beginning to end and look for structural barriers
• Create norms for the evaluation process that allow for greater equity in selection and concept
review
• Explore ways that King Street Station can be a hub for the cultural community
Youth + Community
• Resource and expand the City of Music Super Internship program and work to align with the
Mayor’s youth employment goals
• Host a City of Music Career Day meeting to reflect on past years, and to plan/rebrand the 2017
event
• Host three community outreach events throughout Seattle with the following goals; host in a
location that is accessible to communities of color and traditionally underinvested communities,
plan each event using the Racial Equity Tool kit, and gathering community feedback about arts
and music related issues that the commission can use for advocacy tools.
