Agenda Bill No. June 30, 1971 w
Referred TO: City.Manager and City Council
Subject:
?* Street Sign Standardization
Submitted By:
William C. Baldwin Purchasing Agent
Statement of the Matter : As requested three vendors have delrvered samples
of their organization's street signs to these offices. The Public lrlorks Director, City Engineer and myself have inspected these signs and concluded that the uni.t from Western Highhay Signs is our first selectian.
We feel the sign should be a green background with white letters and including block-numbers. This will be an extruded, aluminum sign with heavy beveled edges to preclude excessive vandal ism and, hopeful ly, constant replacement.
Our second choice is the sample submitted by Hawkins and Hawkins Company -- which also has the advantage of being more vandal proof. We have had a sample unit. of this sign at the Southeast corner of Harding and Elm Avenue for several months. The white on green is available fi-om this source also, as is the recommended reflectorized background and lettering for easy night visibility.
.There'is little difference in the cost of si'gns meeting the above specifi- cations. An approximate cost per complete unit would be $30.00.
Signs can be viewed in the office of the Purchasing Agent.

.. .- City Manager's Recommendation
It should be noted that the majority of our present street signs are white on blue, although it is true that the-more recent si.gns are white on green. Selection of- appropriate street signs is not entirely an ob- jective matter but involves considerable subjective consideration such as appearance of the signs, etc.
1 believe that the City Council as a group should indicate their preference as to the appropriate street sign.for'our City and that this sian should be the one that is standardized for new developments and re- p~ ;cement s i gni ng .
