M.Brown, May 5, 1972, re: parking on Ponto Drive Staff Recommendations COUNCIL ACTION: 5-16-72 Referred to Traffic Safety Commission for recommendation. y ' 2 r Ianikai Lane Mobile H.Park 6550 Ponto Dr., 1107 Carlsbad, Calif. 92003 Mw 5, 1972 City Council N.embers Carlsbad, Calif. 92008 Gentlemen; This is to request that you start proceedings to post frontage road Ponto Drive in front of our mobile home park as either Tow Away Zone or No Parking at any time on either side of road for following reasons: 1. Ponto Drive is the only access road for residents of Lanikai Lane N.obile Homo Park. 2. Ponto Drive is barely a two-lane road with _'.ceplant on both sides plus a County or City ra intained chain link fence within two feet of ;west side of road. 3. Cars parked on this road convert it to a one -'lane road so that two cars cannot pass so one must wait or back up. There is a jog at the north end of the park so that southbound cars cannot he soon until they are around the jog. 4. During Easter wook-end and week car:. were parked by surfers and left for 3 and 4 days at a time, including vans in which people slept. Occupants sleeping in the back of pick-up truck were observed using the roadside for a bathroom. Boxes, papers and other trash were left on both sides of the fenco. 5. Cars came in and parked as late as 12:30 at night - young people were observed jumping the fence, walked across Hwy 101 and were admitted to the So. Carlsbad State Beach Park through the gate. 6. There are six women that we know of, w1dows and single, who live alone in coaches that back up to Ponto Drive. Thole are also older couples in this po ition, plus one or two men on disability. With the drug problem such as it is, the presence of these transients both day and night is extremely frightening and disturbing all of us. We all have quite an investment here and feel we should be able to live and sleep without worry. 7. Should bicycles or other items be stolen our insurance rate would increase. 8. 'Two people on bicycles were almost struck by a car who had to swing out around a parked car. 9. We feel if the City of Carlsbaa car, proto-t the flower growers they can and should protect people in your area, who as a croup patronize and spend money In your stores. We sirceroly hope that the City Council will give very serious consideration to this request. Please have these signs posed before the summer influx of surfers. We trust it will riot take an injury accident or arpleasant incident to nffe,t action. Sincerely, cc; rayor David Lunn is. & P-'r`s. V6. 1',% Brown
