Subject: RESTORATION OF THE MAGEE HOUSE - CONTRACT NO. 1034
Statement of the Matter
On May 16, 1976 at 1O:OO a.m., the City Clerk opened sealed bids for Contract No. 1034 for restoration of the Magee House.
The architect estimated the cost at $60,000.00 and the low bid was
submitted by Helton Construction Co. of Carlsbad in the amount of
$73,356.00.
Available funds for this project are in the amount of $61,300.00. Attached is a memorandum from the Director- of Parks and Recreation recommending a method of financing the additional required funds.

Recommendation
Adopt Resolution No. 394"/, accepting bids and authorizing the
Mayor to execute a contract with Helton Construction Co. of Carlsbadj
and Resolution No. .J , authorizing transfer of funds from the
Parks and Boulevards fund balance to the Restoration of the Magee
House project.
Council action
7-6-76 Resolution #3951 was adopted, accepting bids and authorizing Mayor to execute contract with Helton Construction Co. Resolution #3952 was also adopted, authorizing transfer of
funds from Fund 5-000-0900, Parks and Recreation Fund Balance.

MEMORANDUM
TO : THE CITY MANAGER

SUBJECT: MAGEE HOUSE BID CONSIDERATION
A meeting was held with Mr. Ed Ebright of Environmental
Design and Graphics, Mr. Joe Spano and Mr. Dick Sprehe
of the City Engineering Department and Mr. Ed Johnson, Director of Parks and Recreation regarding the bid sub- missions for the renovation of the Magee House.
The Environmental Design and Graphics estimate was $60,000.
The highest bid by Shelstead Construction of Del Mar for
$113,700 was determined to be excessively high. The plans
were reviewed and the low bid by Helton Construction of
Carlsbad is considered appropriate.
Mr. Ebright, with Staff concurrence, believes economizinq would
defeat the basic concept of the renovation. There does not
appear to be any major items on the plans that can be eliminated
and any small items would not significantly reduce the cost.
Staff recommends that the low bid be accepted and that the
additional funds be authorized by the City Council for the
project .

RESOLUTION NO. 3952 .
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF TH.E CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, AUTHORIZING ADDITIONAL
FUNDS FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE MAGEE HOUSE "
PROJECT.
WHEREAS, the funds budgeted for the Restoration of the
Magee House are insufficient to complete the, project;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that $12,000.00 is hereby
authorized from Fund 5-,000-0900, Parks and Recreation Fund
Balance, of the City-of Carlsbad solely and exclusively for the
purpose of ihe Restoration of the Magee House.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the
City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, held the
6th day of July , 1976, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: Councilmen Frazee, Lewis, Packard, Skotnicki and

RESOLUTION NO. 3951
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, ACCEPTING BIDS AND AUTHOR-
IZING THE EXECUTION OF CONTRACT NO. 1034 FOR THE
RESTORATION OF THE MAGEE HOUSE.
WHEREAS, bids have been received by the City of Carlsbad
for t..e restoration of the Magee House Contract No. 1034; and,
WHEREAS, the low bid received for this construction was
submitted by Helton Construction Co. in the amount of $73,356.00;
NOW, TPEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
Clty of Carlsbad as follows:
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. The bid of $73,356.00 by Helton Construction Co. of
Carlsbad for Contract No. 1034, for restoration of the Magee
House is hereby accepted and the Mayor and City Clerk are hereby
authorized to execute a contract therefore.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the
City Ccuncil of the City of Carlsbad held the 6th day of
July , 1976, by the following vote, to wit:
