ADOBE RUINS OF STAGE STATIONS IN LA COSTA (SANTA FE KNOLLS).
During their approval .of CT-75-9, the Planning Commission noted the vul- nerability of the adobe ruins that are in the park site being dedicated as part of the map. They felt that there will be an increase in interest in the ruins when people start moving into the area. Since this is public property, and an important historical site, the Planning Commission felt
it should be protected.
The staff was directed to prepare a report of this matter. The Planning Commission reviewed the report and has referred the matter to the City
Council with the request that the City Council initate certain necessary

SUBJECT : REPORT ON ADOBE RUINS
At a recent Planning Commission hearing on the Santa Fe Knolls pro-
ject one commissioner requested that staff prepare a report on the protection of the adobe ruins. The ruins are located on the portion of the Santa Fe Knolls site which is to be deeded to the City for park
age to the ruins and it appears that the preservation of the ruins is in jeopardy unless remedial actions are taken.
An informal meeting has been held by staff members from Planning and Parks and Recreation, and the staff archaeologist from RECON. In addition, the San Diego County Archaeological Society and the Carlsbad Historical Society have been contacted. Both groups have indicated I

and the San Diego County Archaeological Society, would submit the site for registration in the National Register of Historic Sites. This measure would formalize the City's commitment to preserve the ruins (although it carries little force legally). If the City were to apply for a restoration grant in the future, regis-
tration as a historic site would be desirable.

The cost of protecting the ruins (primari!y the $500.00 estimated for 1 fencing) would have to be raised either from City funds or private donations. If the Planning Commission determines that protective measures are necessary, they may wish to'suggest a funding method to the City Council.
In addition to short-term measures, eventually, the ruins will have to be closed or restored in order to halt the gradual erosion of the walls due to wind and rain. Although no measure is being proposed at this time, the City should consider additional protective or rest-
