DATE: ,, z June 7, 1977 e Replacement of Council Chamber Furnace Statement of the Matter The furnace in the Council Chamber was recently inspected by City staff and representatives from the San Diego Gas and Electric Companj operation of the unit and, due to the corrosion in the unit, the entire furnace would need to be replaced in the near future. Three vendors were asked to inspect the furnace and give quotations on the heat exchangers and the cost of replacing the present furnace. The lowest bid for replacing the entire unit was submitted by Thermodyne; 2603 Oceanside Blvd.; Oceanside, Ca, in the amount of $2,368.00. Funds are available in General Government Buildings - Outside Service account for th'e purchase and installation of the replacement furnace. Exhibit 1. Maintenance SUBJECT: Counci 1 Chamber Furnace The furnace in the Council Chambers was inspected by SDG&E repre- sentatives who indicated that the heat exchangers had corroded out and must be replaced for safe operation of the unit. considerable corrosion of the remainder of the installation which will require replacement in the near future. between the ceiling and roof in an almost inaccessible crawl space over the Mayor's office. I had three vendors inspect the installation and provide me their expert opinion on replacing the heat exchangers or the entire unit with the intention of mounting the units on the roof where they can be worked on when required. Two recommended against replacing the heat exchangers alone and recommended complete unit replacement. vendor did submit a bid on replacement of the heat exchangers only replacing the entire unit. In view of the recommendation to replace the complete units and from my personal observation, it is recommended that the furnace be replaced and new units located on the roof. similar to the unit installed for the computer room. Accordingly, it is recommended that the quotation from Thermodyne for replacing the units at a cost of $2368 be accepted. Funds in Account Number 01 -1 31 -2460 are sufficient to cover these costs. BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Carlsbad as follows: 1.
