Mgr. 5 GEPARTMENT : - CONSTRUCTION OF STREET IMPROVEMENTS ON SOUTH SIDE OF BASSWOOD - MONROE TO VALLEY AND EAST SIDE OF MONROE - VALLEY TO CHESTNUT -- Statement of the Matter The Carlsbad Unified School District is proposing to install curb, gutter and sidewalk along the Basswood frontage of the high school site. It will be necessary to widen the pavement after construction of curb and gutter. The ' City has agreed to pay for the cost of paving as well as provide the necessary design and field engineering required for this project. The School District has verbally offered to extend the terms of the agreement to provide similar improvements on Valley from Basswood to Chestnut. Recommendation If City Council concurs, they should accept the School District's offer and instruct the City Manager to prepare an agreement with the Carlsbad Unified School District to provide public improvements along Valley Street. If Council approves this project, a fund transfer will be required frm Gas Tax Reserves. Council action 1-3-78 The School District's offer was accepted, the City Manager was instructed to prepare an agreement with the Carlsbad Unified School District,. and authorization was given for a fund transfer from Gas Tax Reserves. MEMORANDUM TO : City Manager FROM : Pub I i c Works Admi n i strator DATE : December 27, 1977 SUBJECT: Street Improvements - Carlsbad High School As a condition of the Pool Agreement, the Carlsbad Unified School District and the City will be installing curb, gutter, sidewalk and pavement on Bass- wood Avenue along the school's northerly boundary. proposed to extend the cooperative project to install curb, gutter, sidewalk and pavement on Valley Street along the westerly school property frontage. The District has verbal ly The Engineering Department has plans on file which can be readily revised to establish the grades for the curb on both streets. Pavement must be extended to meet the new gutter line and certain areas overlayed to provide for proper drainage and riding surface. It would facili- tate maintenance of the street and provide a pedestrian walkway in an area where it is badly needed. City Manager -2- December 27, 1977 If the Council decides to accept the School District's offer and contribute to the expanded project, I would propose that we delay work at the corner of Basswood and Valley until work on the new school tennis courts is complete. RECOMMENDATION That City Council accept the School District's offer and instruct the City Manager to prepare an agreement with the Carlsbad Unified School District to provide pub1 ic improvements along Val ley Street.
