Subject: AMENDMENT TO BUILDING CODE REQUIRING FIRE RETARDANT ROOFS.
Statement of the Matter
The City Council at their meeting of August 15, 1978
instructed the City Attorney to prepare an Ordinance
amending the Uniform Building Code to require fire
retardant roofs on all structures located within 1500
feet of brush covered lands. An ordinance in that
regard is attached.

Council Action:
9-5-78 Ordinance No. 8085 was introduced for a first reading,
amending the Uniform Building Code' to require fire
retardant roofs under certain circumstances, with the
inclusion of the words "or more" on line 17.
9-19-78 Ordinance No. 8085 was given a second reading and
adopted.

ORDINANCE NO. 8085
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA AMENDING
TITLE 18, CHAPTER 18.04, OF THE CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL CODE BY THE ADDITION OF SECTION
18.04.105 TO AMEND THE UNIFORM BUILDING
CODE TO REQUIRE FIRE RETARDANT ROOFS
UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES.
The Citv Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, does
ordain as follows:
SECTION 1: That Title 18, Chapter 18.04, of the Carlsbad
Municipal Code is amended by the addition of Section 18.04.105
to read as follows:
"18.04.105 3203(h) added --fire retardant roofs reauired.
Section 3203 of the Uniform Building Code is amended by the addition
of Subsection (h) to read as follows:
'(h) Fire retardant roof coverings required. The roof
covering for all structures to be constructed or relocated within
1500 feet of brush covered lands shall be fire retardant as
specified in Section 3203(e). For purposes of this section "brush
covered land" shall mean any area with native vegetation such as
brush, chaparral, trees, scrub oak, sumac, sage, buckwheat, grease -
wood, grass, weeds and other similar vegetation when such lands
exceed an area of two acres or has a horizontal distance of 400
feet or more."'
EFFECTIVE DATE: This ordinance shall be effective thirty
days after its adoption, and the City Clerk shall certify to the
adoption of this ordinance and cause it to be published at least
once in the Carlsbad Journal within fifteen days after its
adoption.
INTRODUCED AND FIRST READ at a regular meeting of the
Carlsbad City Council held on the 5 h day of September 1978,
and thereafter
