DATE : DECEMBER 5, 1978 DEPARTMENT: PLANNING DEPARTMENT Initial: Dept . Hd . Jofi C. Atty. C. Mgr. 3, APPROVAL OF ELEVATIONS FOR THE SEARS STORE IN PLAZA CAMINO REAL Statement of the Matter Background The architectural firm working for Sears has recently resubmitted elevations for the proposed Sears store to be built at Plaza Camino Real. These resubmitted elevations differ slightly from those that were approved by the City Council on August 1, 1978. The difference is that a great deal of the brown metal fascia/parapet has been eliminated. The revised elevations show more block and less fascia which is consistent with the rest of the center. Also, the color is similar to existing colors and textures already used at the center. Request The architects for the Sears store are requesting City Council approval of redesigned elevations for Sears to be used instead of the elevations approved by Council on August 1, 1978. - .e Exhibits Memo to Planning Director dated November 21, 1978. HAGAMAN, Planning Director DON L. ROSE, Current Planning APPROVAL OF ELEVATIONS OF THE SEARS STORE IN PLAZA CAMINO REAL Intent of Sears to change the approved elevations The architectural firm working for Sears has recently resubmitted elevations for the proposed Sears store to be built at Plaza Camino Real. These resubmitted elevations differ slightly from those that were approved by the City Council on August 1, 1978. I have attached rendered drawings of both the approved and proposed elevations. The only difference is that a great deal of the dark brown metal fascia/parapet has been eliminated. Personally, I do not consider this change to be significant. If anything, it will probably make it easier for the proposed building to be compatible. The dark brown fascia was an item of contrast. The revised elevations show more block and less fascia. The block color is similar to existing colors and textures already used at the center. The Sears peop1e.have already pulled permits for the building foundation. They are anxious'to pull the rest of the building permits. Time is important to them. They wish they had their permits now. They feel that December 20, 1978 is the absolute latest deadline they can live with. If this has to go back to ' Council we will have to high step it and bring it up soon. If not, I will notify the Sears' architects as soon as I get the word. Perhaps, we can avoid further Council action since the change is slight. I'm prepared to discuss this with you and the City Manager at your request. If Council action is necessary let me know as soon as possible and I will prepare an Agenda Bill. DLR: ms
