Atty. /s/ C. Mgr. /s/ Subject: MAGEE PARK Statement of the Matter The Carlsbad Historical Society has requested that the barn at Magee Park not be removed or destroyed. This request was presented to Council on November 28, 1978 by Allan Kelly. The Historical Society would like to use the barn as a storage facility for the antiques they have collected. They propose to renovate it using volunteer labor. On two previous occasions Council approved plans to remove the barn from the premises. First, on April 18, 1978, Council approved the conceptual design of the park which included the removal of the barn. At its meeting on November 7, 1978, Council disapproved the Senior Citizen's Association request to use the barn for a food co-op, also directing staff to demolish the barn as soon as possible. At its November 20, 1978 meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously recommended that the demolition of the barn b@ postponed until Council considers the feasibility of allowing a private. contractor to remove it. Renovation of the barn to comply with code requirements has been estimated to cost between $22,000 and $27,000. The Historical Society would renovate the building using volunteer labor. Recommendation That Council authorize the Carlsbad Historical Society to renovate the barn to comply with code as a storage unit at their expense and/or with volunteer labor. Council action: 12-19-78 Council agreed to allow the Historical Society to renovate the Magee barn subject to their submission of a concept plan to Council within 90 days, that construction must be completed in a year, and that plans are to coincide with existing plans for landscaping and completion of the park.
