RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Introduce Ordinance No. 7062 Prohibiting the Use of Saline Discharging
Water Softener Units in the Lake Calavera Hills Drainage Basin.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The use of saline discharging water softeners greatly affects the cost
and efficiency of a water reclamation system. Each of these water
softeners dumps as much as 600 pounds of salt into the sewer system a
year. That salt cannot be removed in the normal reclamation system;
therefore, the use of reclaimed water would be exceedingly limited.
The Engineering staff has researched this topic and feels that adoption
of this ordinance is needed.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Building Department, in its normal operations, issues permits and
performs inspections on the installation of all water softeners. Since
no additional procedures are required, no fiscal impact is foreseen.
