ITEM EXPLANATION :
Staff is proposing an amendment to Ordinance No. 8087. This is the adoptive ordinance for the 1979 Uniform Buildinq Code.
The section to be amended (18.04.080) deals with automatic fire sprinkler requirements.

Essentially all buildings or portions thereof in excess of 10,000 square feet require the installation of an automatic fire sprinkler system.
There are currently two exceptions to this requirement: Type I or Type I1 fi resistive buildings can be increased to 20,000 square feet and buildings wher' four hour masonry area separation walls are installed so that no portion of the building exceeds 10,000 square feet.
This amendment would permit a third exception for residential wood frame construction by the use of double two hour fire wall.
Both the Fire and Building Departments concur that this proposal meets the intent of the general requirements of the ordinance.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No additional costs to the City. Indeterminate cost savings to the developmet communi ty .

ORDINANCE NO. 8096
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING TITLE 18, CHAPTER
18.04 OF THE CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL CODE BY THE
AMENDMENT OF SECTION 18.04.080 TO ALLOW A TWO-
HOUR FIRE WALL EXCEPTION TO THE BUILDING
SPRINKLER REOUIREMENT. -

The City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California
does ordain as follows:
SECTION 1: That Title 18, Chapter 18.04 of the
Carlsbad Municipal Code is amended by the addition of section
18.04.080(b)(7)(iii) to read as follows:
(iii) In residential occupancies of Type V and Type
One-hour construction, two adjacent two-hour separation walls
with no openings except limited penetrations for utilities wi
be permitted. The walls must conform to all. provisions of th most recently adopted Un.iform Building Code and be approved b
the Building Official and Fire Chief.
EFFECTIVE DATE: This ordinance shall be effective
thirty days after its adoption, and the City Clerk shall cert
to the adoption of this ordinance and cause it to be publishe
at least once in the Carlsbad Journal within fifteen days aft
its adoption.
