MATTnwAi. vibt4 Af ATIVNiV TXT mAnVT Artn �+iry iii►v� :�:_ RECOMMENDED ACTION: Authorize battalion chief to travel to the National Fire Academy in Emmittsburg, Maryland to attend a two -week computerized management information systems course for fire service management. ITEM EXPLANATION: The course being offered is a two -week course in the use of micro- computers for management information systems. The National Fire Academy, located in Maryland, is structured to provide training and instruction to fire agencies, both large and small, throughout the United States. This particular course is unique in that it is the only computer course of this type built around the needs of the fire service. FISCAJ� '.M*DkCT: The net cost to the city is $132 for the two weeks. This covers the cost of meals. Rooms are provided at no charge, and air fare, approximatley $400, is fully refunded by the federal government. Funds are available for this training in the current budget. EXHIBIT: 1. Course Description. Information Management In the Fire Service (R502) is a two -week course focusing on the effective us of information systems in fire and emergency medical service agencies. The course is intended to provide Fire Service managers and allied professionals with the background necessary to asseas information needs and to outline requirementsfor multi -terminal computer systems. The effective procurement, installation and use of computerized information systems will also be addressed in this course. Course curriculum is supported by a computerized information system: Students attending the course will be loaned'a "lap -sized" computer for accessing information, word processing and submitting' class assignments. The Academy's computerized information system will simulate the type of system necessary to copvert fire department information systems from paper -based to computer -based. 0 1 Student Selection Criteria: • There are no prerequisites for this course, but acceptance will be restricted to fire, EMS, and allied professional -managers responsible for the implementation of a multi -terminal computer system. No more than one person will be allowed to. attend from any one agency.
