HO?.ft?\\{ .. CITY ATTY Vl25 CITY MGR.~· Introduce Ordinance No. ¥!? O to revise the speed limit on Rancho Santa Fe Road from the north city limits to the south city limits to 45 miles per hour. ITEM EXPLANATION: On March 4, 1985, the Traffic Safety Commission approved a staff recommendation to reduce the speed limit on Rancho Santa Fe Road from 55 MPH to 4S MPH. Section 22358 of the California Vehicle Code gives jurisdictions such authority on the basis of an engineering and traffic survey. There have been 20 non-injury and 15 injury accidents on Rancho Santa Fe Road within the last 12 months. The road is winding with numerous slow trucks. The "engineering and traffic survey" in this case is the accident record. FISCAL IMPACT: Staff is recommending 4 -4 'x8' warning signs at ,$250. 00 per sign, and 8 R-2 ( 45) Speed Limit signs 36"x45" at $50.00 per sign. A total of $1,400.00 is the estimated final cost . NATURE OF THE PROBLEM Officer Richard Kates of the Polic~ Department is concerned abou~ the speed limit on Rancho Santa Fe Road. DISCUSSION In the last 12 months there have been 15 injury accidents and 20 non-injury accidents in this area, The road is narrow arid is in very poor condition structurally. When the development takes place in the near future, the street will be widened and improved. RECOHMENDiHI ON Until the full street improvements are i.,stalled, it is staff's recommendation to lower the speed limit to 45 mph. That Title 1 O, Chapter 10. 44 of the Carlsbad 8 Municipal Code is amended by the addition of Section 10.44. 190 to 9 read as follows: 10 "10.44 .190 Rancho Santa Fe Road.
