TITLE:ESTABLISHING A 35 MILE PER HOUR
SPEED LIMIT ON EL CAMINO REAL
FROM 500 FEET NORTH OF ELM AVENUE
TO THE NORTH CITY LIMITS
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Introduce Ordinance No. 3 J '}~ to establish a 35 mile per
hour speed limit on El Camino Real from 500 feet north of Elm
Avenue to the north city limits.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
On April 1, 1985, the Traffic Safety Commission approved a
staff recommendation to establish a 35 mile per hour speed
limit on El Camino Real from 500 feet north of Elm Avenue to
the north city limits. The speed limit on El Camino Real from
500 feet north of Elm Avenue to the southern cjty limits is 55
miles per hour.
The traffic on El Camino Real between Marron Road and the
north city limits is usually very congested. There are
driveways entering onto El Camino Real from different
businesses in this areea. The speed limit of El Camino Real
in Oceanside is 45 miles per hour.
FISCAL IMPACT:
A total of four signs at $50.00 per sign will be needed. Cost
of enforcement of these speed limits is unchanged.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD,
CALIFORNIA, AMENDING TITL[ 10, CHAPTER 10.44 OF THE
MUNICIPAL CODE BY THE AMENDMtNT OF SECTION 10.44.060 TO
ESTABLISH A THIRTY-FIVE MILE PER HOUR SPEED LIMIT ON EL
CAMINO REAL FROM FIVE HUNDRED FEET NORTH OF ELM AVENUE TO
THE NORTH CITY LIMITS.
The City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, hereby ordains as
7 follows:
8 SECTION 1. That Title 10, Chapter 10.44 of the Carlsbad Municipal code is
9 amended so that Section 10.44,060 reads as follows:
10 "10.44.060 El Camino Real (a) The prima facie speed limit on El Camino
Real from a point five hundred feet north of its intersection with Elm Avenue
ll to the south city limits is fifty-five miles per hour.
(b) The pr j ma facie speed limit on El Camino Real from five hundred feet
12 north of Elm Avenue to the north city limits is thirty five miles per ho1,1r.11
13 EFFECTIVE DATE: This ordinance shall be effective thirty days after its
14 adoption, and the City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this ordinance
15 and cause it to be published at least once in the Carlsbad Journal within
16 fifteen days after its adoption.
17 INTRODUCED AND FIRST READ at a regular meeting of the City Council held
18 the 16th day of April , 1985, and thereafter
19 PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Carlsbad City
20 Council held on the 7~ day of _Ma_y ___ , 1985 by the following vote, to
21 wit:
