AB#- TITLE: DEPT. HD.:
MTG. 4/7/87 OFFSHORE OIL CITY ATTYU
CITY MGR.+ DEPT. CM LEASING ..,
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt motion authorizing Mayor to send letter to Congressman
Packard urging him to oppose oil drilling leases off the San Diego
Coast.
BACKGROUND
In 1986 Carlsbad City Council adopted a resolution requesting that oil leasing not be allowed off the San Diego Coast. The
resolution was sent to Secretary of Interior and Congressman Packard. Some tracts were deleted, but the Secretary retained the right to lease offshore.
Under Federal law a five-year (1987-92) leasing program was proposed on February 2, 1987. The 30-day public comment period has expired. The proposed program will be filed with Congress for approval in the future.
If the Council still opposes offshore leasing, it is recommended that Mayor Lewis write to Congressman Packard expressing the City Council's opposition.
