R/AG FEDERAL FUNDS CITY Mi RECOMMENDED ACTION: Authorize the Mayor to sign the attached letter supporting Tri-City Hospital Foundation's application for federal funds. ITEM EXPLANATION: In the attached letter, Mr. Alan J. Shada, president of the Tri-City Hospita Foundation, requests a letter of support for the Foundation's application for federal funds under the Urban Mass Transportation Act. The purpose of th application is to secure a patient van to provide transportation services for the elderly and handicapped to and from Tri-City Medical Center's new aduli day care center. Successful application will enabl van, to provide transportation services to the elder1 and hand- center. Additionally, transportation services will be provided to the cardiac rehabilitation and out-patient surgery centers. For many seniors on a fixed income, public transportation serv- ices are unavailable or inadequate. The hospital began providing medical care to North San Diego County in 1961, and today is recognized as being among the finest facilities in the state. The Foundation was organized three years later, and is governed by a board of volunteer Trustees. These men and women raise money through fund-raising programs and projects so that this center can provide the highest quality care possible. If any further information and/or clarification is needed, please call the Foundation office, 940-3370. The 1980 Census revealed that more than one-tenth of Carls- bad's population is aged 65 or older. for the elderly and handicapped to and from Tri-City Medical Center's new adult day-care center that you are proposing will increase the quality of life for many Carlsbad residents. The Carlsbad City Council appreciates the Foundation's continuing effort to ensure that the Hospital provides the highest quality medical care to North San Diego County.
