MP RECOMMENDED ACTION: ADDITIONAL REMOVAL AND RECONSTRUCTIOE Adopt Resolution No. 89 -2 5 approving Change Order Number 2 f the reconstruction of an additional 9,000 square feet Carlsbad's Swim Complex deck, Project No. 3271. ITEM EXPLANATION: The Carlsbad Swim Complex was constructed in 1982 by the City Carlsbad in conjunction with the Carlsbad Unified Schc deteriorated considerably due to cracking of the concrete B expansion of the rusting reinforcing steel. Additionally, t slot drain system surrounding the swimming pool has experienc similar deterioration. On October 25, 1988, the City Council awarded a contract to RC Construction, Incorporated, for the removal and reconstruction deteriorated portions of concrete decking surrounding t Carlsbad Swim Complex. This work was to include an ax measuring approximately seven and one-half (7 1/2) feet in wid around the entire swimming pool. During the demolition of t deck, extensive corrosion and deterioration of underlyi reinforcing steel and concrete was discovered which extended the perimeter of the pool. This condition, if left unaddress and not corrected, will necessitate additional major and cost repairs in the next few years. District. In addition, staff recommends the installation of new drainage system to replace the existing deteriorati concrete system. The new drainage system will not require t installation of reinforcing steel which currently is the maj cause of the rust, corrosion, and concrete slab deterioration. Staff recommends the City Council consider expanding the curre scope of work to include removal and replacement of t remaining concrete decking around the swimming pool a replacement of the drainage system to more efficiently captu and drain the water around the pool. This additional work represents a major reconstruction of t Swimming Pool Complex to correct longstanding deficiencies in t drainage system and replace deteriorating decking and t surrounding concrete slab. Staff has negotiated a cost $99,745 with the current contractor to perform the additior work required to correct the existing problems. Attached Char Order No. 2 is recommended for approval if the Council authoris additional expansion of work to include the items listed above. In the 1987-88 Capital Improvement Program budget, the Cj Council appropriated $250,000 for this project. The origir contract amount of $61,291 has been previously authorized for t current scope of work. The approval of Change Order No. 2 in t amount of $99,745 will enable the complete reconstruction of t pool deck to be accomplished within the previously authoriz total project budget of $250,000. The additional work will require approximately thirty (: estimated project completion date of March 1, 1989.
