Director's Report June 1990 010 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR FROM: Senior Management Analyst MONTHLY REPORT FOR MAY-JUNE 1990 The Community Garage Sale on Saturday, June 2nd had 86 vendors with over 1,400 participants at Holiday Park. Anything from bric-a-brac to unique dog hats were available at the sale. In a charitable effort, much of what was left at the day's end was given to needy families here in Carlsbad. Preparation for Carlsbad Triathlon 90 is currently underway. Volunteers are being rounded up, and staff members are working together for perfect coordination of the biggest event in Carlsbad, scheduled for Sunday, July 8th. In our Sports Division, the Youth Sports section is preparing for the Youth Summer Volleyball and Basketball Camps sponsored in conjunction with the Fieldstone Company. We expect about 250 youngsters to enjoy our camps this summer. The first phase of the Carlsbad Invitational Basketball Tournament will take place over the weekend of June 22-23rd at the Calavera Hills Community Park. This tournament brings together eight (8) San Diego County area boys' basketball teams with boys from ages 15 to 17 competing. Adult Sports' Softball playoffs are currently in progress and will continue over the next two weeks with 70 teams vying for those championship trophies. The Golf Course Steering and Technical Advisory Committees are considering what type and size of auxiliary facilities should be included in Carlsbad's golf course project. Considerations include the type of club house, practice areas, and size of the driving range. Meanwhile, staff is conducting an inventory of golf course facilities in the County in order to meet any specific needs Carlsbad might have. P & D Technologies, the environmental consultants, did not identify any endangered flora or fauna on the site. So far, the preliminary plan is progressing as scheduled. Our Parks Crews have been busy preparing Calavera, Stagecoach, and Magee Parks so that we can enjoy this Summer's Concert on the Green series. All concerts will be on Fridays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning June 29th at Calavera Hills. Fliers of concert dates and times are available from the Arts Office. Even with the Stage II Water Alert we are able to hold the concerts for yet another summer. In order to conserve water, our Parks Division has turned off the fountain in downtown Carlsbad and also reprogrammed the irrigation controllers throughout all City parks for watering between the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. only. Parks crews are also working together with the Street crews to rootprune and repair sidewalks in the Redevelopment area. The 8th Annual Carlsbad Barbecue sponsored by the Big Bang Committee and the Carlsbad Journal will be held at Holiday Park on June 23rd. Admission is $5, and proceeds go to the 4th of July fireworks display off Carlsbad Boulevard. Hope to see you al>~there! KEITH BEVERLY c: City Manager Assistant City Manager Department Heads . Qi
