MONTHLY REPORT FOR JULY 1990
The 9th Annual Carlsbad Triathlon held Sunday, July 8th was a huge success.
There were 840 individual entries along with 54 relay teams. The race consisted
of a IK swim, 25K bike ride, and a 5K run. Kerry Classen took honors in the
Men's Overall event and Terry Martin-Bush took honors in the Women's Overall.
In our Sports Division, the Youth Sports section is in the midst of their most
successful summer sports camp program. More than 150 youngsters will be involved
in Youth Summer Volleyball and Basketball Camps sponsored in conjunction with
the Fieldstone Company.
The Adult Sports is in the process of registering for the Fall Season, 108 teams
will compete in Men, Women and Coed Softball beginning in mid-August.
The 12th Annual Bodysurfing Contest will be held August 4/5, 1990 at Carlsbad
State Beach, Pine Street. The event is open to anyone 12 and older with the
first heat starting at 7:00 a.m.
The Senior Center's Annual Ice Cream Social held Sunday, July 15, served ice
cream to 260 people.
Emergency Water Safety and Lifeguard Training are being conducted at the Swim
Complex and will end in August. These courses provide training as required by
the State of California for employment at a swimming pool.
The North Coast Aquatics Swim Team is sponsoring a novice swim meet which will
be held on July 28th from 8:00 - 12:00 noon at the Carlsbad Swim Complex.
The Parks Division assisted with the Buena Vista Lagoon duck feeding dedication
on Saturday, July 14th, and has assumed regular maintenance duties at this
facility.
The Parks Division is beginning preparations for the "Pops" concert on the green
turf installation. The concert will be on Sunday, September 2, 1990 on the Koll
property site, at Faraday. The next three 'Jazz in the Parks' concerts will be
at Stagecoach park, with the last three ending at Magee Park.
Effective July 30, three new full-time Parks employees will begin service with
the City. One will be for median maintenance, the other two will be for Parks
maintenance.
