Director's Report, September 1990 u< 8 09 September 12, 1990 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VIA: Senior Management Analyst FROM: Recreation Leader II, Stacy Weaver Special Events will be supporting "Adopt-A-Beach/Coastal Clean-Up Day" on Saturday, September 22, 1990, 9:00 a.m. at Tamarack State Beach, This is part of a nationwide voluntary effort to call attention to the importance of the nation's coastlines. The Annual Body Surfing Contest attracted 125 contestants on August 4th as did the Bodyboard Contest held on September 8th. In the Sports Department, cross-country training has begun at Holiday, Calavera, and Stagecoach Parks. The City and County wide track meets will be held October through early December. Adult Sports recruited 24 volleyball teams as well as 24 basketball teams. Both begin play next week at Stagecoach Park and Calavera. The Senior Center and Gerico's Restaurant will host a Teriyaki Chicken Dinner on Sunday, September 23, 1990, at 3:00 p.m. Tickets will be available for a minimum donation of $5.00. All proceeds will be in support of the Senior Center. The Parks Division has just completed temporary renovation/expansion at Valley Junior High School to accommodate a regulation soccer facility. New fall hours are currently in effect at the Swim Complex. Fall lesson started Monday, September 9, 1990 with 60 swimmers registered. Fifteen water polo games are scheduled this fall for Carlsbad High School. During the City Council meeting on August 28th, the Council authorized staff to apply for funding in the amount of $172,000 under the 1988 State Park Bond Act for a passive/active development for a portion of Hosp Grove (5.5 acres). Staff has sent the application summary with the agenda bill and resolution authorizing the application for funding. This will serve as Carlsbad's Notice of Intent to collect its per capita allotment ($172,000) under the State Bond Act. Parks and Recreation staff has begun work updating the City of Carlsbad's Landscape Manual. These standards which the City imposes on developers will include, for example, stronger water conservation requirements and update technical requirements. —i^j STACY WEAVER dm 10
