MONTHLY REPORT FOR MARCH-APRIL 1991
The Special Events staff was extremely busy last month as they conducted four big events
for the City. The Department held its 4th Annual Men's Softball Tournament at Stagecoach
Park. Twelve teams signed up for this one-day, double elimination tournament. The
tournament was a great success, and the Department is looking to expand the event to a
three-day, Saint Patrick's Day tournament for 1992. This will allow for more teams to enter
the popular event.
On March 12th staff conducted a Scavenger Hunt at Holiday Park for the Pine School Kid's
Club program. Over 40 kids attended the event and enjoyed the special prizes that were
given away to the best "scavenging teams."
On March 29th, the Department went on its Annual Spring Youth Excursion to Magic
Mountain. Twenty-eight kids went on such rides as Psyclone, Viper, Colossus, Ninja, and
many more. All had a great time, including the exhausted Special Events staff who had to
go on these rides too!!
Lastly, on March 30th, just hours after returning home from Magic Mountain, the Special
Events Department held the City's Annual Egg and Candy Hunts. This year an additional
third hunt was held at Holiday Park. Participant totals were estimated at over 2,000 people
at Stagecoach Park, over 2,000 people at Calavera Park, and over 1,000 people at Holiday
Park. The kids had a wonderful time and enjoyed the candy, plastic eggs with toys inside,
and especially the big specialty prizes given to "golden egg" finders. A special thanks went
out to all community volunteers who passed out over 2,000 "bunny ears" and to the
Recreation staff who helped set this event up in the wee hours of the morning.
The Swim Complex has also had a busy Spring season. They recently hosted the Masters
Swim Meet for ages 18 and older. The meet attracted over 250 eager participants.
Additionally, thirty-five youths participated in the first set of Spring swim lessons. The next
set will begin April 29th. The United States Swim (U.S.S.) Meet is scheduled for April 20th
and 21st. Approximately 1,000 swimmers from all over the County are expected to attend
the event.

The 25-passenger mini bus has arrived at the Senior Center. On March 26th the bus was
unveiled as rides were given around the neighborhood. The bus will be used to transport
people to and from the center as well as for day trips. A "thank you" has gone out to
Fieldstone as they challenged the community to raise $20,000 and then matched at additional
$20,000 to pay for the bus. Seventy-five interested seniors attended the second part of a
four-part series on Leo Carrillo given by Joan and Allen Kindle. On April 18th the Senior
Center is hosting its first of their newly initiated dances. The Golden Tones, the Center's
own band, will be playing the music. Also this month is the Gondola Getaway in Long
Beach; approximately 40 people are expected to go. Lastly, there are three free workshops
hosted by the Center as well as a new Ballroom Dance Class.
Park Planning staff has submitted the Larwin Park project to the Planning Department for
environmental review. The Planning Department will determine whether the project will
require an Environmental Impact Report or not. After their analysis, the project will go
before the Planning Commission for their review.
The Golf Course Steering Committee and Technical Advisory Committee are reviewing
options for clubhouse design for the Lake Calavera Golf Course project currently being
designed.
Youth Sports has just completed a very successful track meet at Carlsbad High School.
More than 100 youngsters participated and ran between the raindrops on March 23rd.
