The following may be considered as doubtful
memorabilia howerer, I would like to share the
events with you regardless.
As a senior citizen now living in Carlsbad, I
attended a prrgram at the Senior Center in which
the life of Kr. Carrillo was reviewed by showing
an old 'This is your life' program that brought
back the following memories of my brief associations
with him.
Back in the thirties I was a young dance teacher
operating Evelyn Bruns Studio of the Dance. We
taught mostly youngsters from age i*ive throufh to
teenagers. As such we wpre often programmed to put
show on for various local everts in Sar Bernardino.
At one benefit for the Salvation Army held at the
California Theatre, !'r. Carrillo was programmed to
be a 'hfadliner'. Along with other 'stars' my darce
group was invited to put on our little show. This
was my first meeting with Kr. Carrillo. We were
standing back-stage watchirg t'ie end of an act and
ard I said that I was going to have a 'smake break'
outside. He daid "yes, r.e too". He drove a real
sporty light colored automobile which he had parked
at therrear of the theatre. We preceded outside and
sat on the running board of his car. While harir.g
our 'sn-.ake' about a dozen or so fans spotted him
sitting there and rushed ofer with autograph booVs
in hand. I recall that it was a 'packed house' in
the theatre because Mr. Carrillo was such a draw and
many of the people were standing around outside toward
the front when the discovery was marie.
Mr. Carrillo with his usual good nature and smile
was busy signing for his fans when someone asked if
I were a star from Hollywood. Just as I was about
to say no, I'm just Evelyn from the local dance studio
was when he gave me (standing next to him) the flbow
and stated "Why sure she is,- This is Evelyn".
So, the fans poked their little books at me and I
went right along with it ard signed my name in thftir
little books. As I recall, there were a bunch of
really happy fans out there because they .ere lucky
enough to have captured two 'stars', both at once.
We both had a £ood langh about ^t.
He was particularly fond of talented children.
Included in my dance troupe were two black children,
brothers age 5 and 7 who performed a tap dance ro'jtjre.
While backstage, he had one sitting on one leg asd
one on the other as he joked and kidded with them. EXHIBIT *

I must explain that Kr. Carrillo was the raster of
cereironies at this benefit. Among the noteable stars
that day that appeared were Will Rogers, Rita Carsino
(Hayworth), Jimmy Gleason, 1'artha Raye, Sons of the
Pioneers ard many more. These proffesionals were inteB-
mixed with the local talents, like my dance troupe.
About two years later, our paths crossed once again.
At this time I was married and visiting Santa Catalina
Island with my husband, for a holiday. Mr. Carrillo
was also there making a personal apprarance. While we
were walking down the main waterfront street my husband
and I noticed a crowd gathered around somebody who
as it turned out was Mr. Carrillo. I stood at the back
of the crowd and as the people thinned out I was
finally standing in front of him. I asked him if
he possibly remmembered me. After a long lock, he
said "you look familiar, hh yes, I know you, you are
Eth§4, the dance girl with all of the kids". We had
a short chat about the kids in my dance troupe and
then we parted.
So you see, I remmember Mr. Carrillo as a very
thoughtful and cheerful person who had time for
nearly everyone. Please accept this snail donation
in support of the restoration of his o]d ranch.
Please keep !p with the good work
—many of us still 'remmernber'.
Thank You
