MONTHLY REPORT FOR APRIL-MAY 1991
The Swim Complex held its final home meet for C.U.S.D. against Torrey Pines on April
30th. Carlsbad High School hosted a total of nine home meets at the Complex this season.
This month staff will be conducting a Basic Lifeguard Safety Class and Water Safety
Instruction Class. Approximately 20 participants are expected for each class. Lastly,
summer staff recruitment has begun as the Complex is gearing up for a big Summer season.
In Sports, the Adult Section is working long hours on spring registrations. Three Person
Basketball and Coed Volleyball are expected to attract 50-60 teams combined. The Youth
Sports Section will be hosting the San Diego County Youth Track and Field Championships
on May 11 at Poway High School. Carlsbad will be sending a group of about 75 who will
join with nearly 1,000 youngsters throughout the County. Good luck to all!
Ballfield Maintenance initiated a new preventative maintenance program. Staff will be
reviewing each field twice a week to ensure public safety.
On May 4 and 5, Special Events conducted their 5th Annual Tennis Tournament in
conjunction with North County Tennis Patrons. The tournament was held at the Carlsbad
High School courts. Approximately 130 children ages 10-18 attended. All proceeds are
donated to the Glenda Hasselo Memorial Fund. The event was a huge success. The Special
Events Department will also be conducting its 3rd Annual Doubles Grass Volleyball
Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for May 18 and 19 at Calavera Hills Community
Center. Staff expects 60-70 teams to participate.
The 10th Annual Carlsbad Triathlon is creeping upon us again. The entire Recreation
Department is currently working together to prepare for this big event scheduled on July 14.
The Department is actively seeking the help of volunteers for the event, so if you wish to
do so, please call 434-2989.
The Senior Center recently held a presentation for the Red Cross, as they donated fifty hand
made flag quilts to be delivered to families who lost loved ones in Operation Desert Storm.
This month is Older Americans Month. On May 15, there will be a Senior Rally at Golden
Hall in San Diego. The Center will send about 40 active seniors to attend this fun event.
The Enrichment Class Section held their Annual Recitals last month. This year a third
recital was added because of growth in the Department. Over 500 youngsters and adults
showcased their talents at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. Special thanks went out to
Cablevision, as they filmed the event and aired it 3 times for friends and family to view.
The new Summer Brochure went out to all Carlsbad residents on May 13.
