MONTHLY REPORT FOR MAY-JUNE 1991
The Senior Center recently took a full bus of sports fans to the San Diego vs. Montreal "Cap
Night" game at Jack Murphy stadium. Everyone received a free hat and had a wonderful
time -- even though the Padres didn't take the win. Tai Chi was also a big hit last month
as an interested 25 active seniors started another free class for this month. The Center
recently donated six beautiful hand-made quilts to teens at Casa de Emparo, a home for
battered children. On June 13th, SDG&E will present Energy Bingo. What's "Energy
Bingo" you ask? Well, while playing, participants will learn safety tips around the home and
how to cut energy costs. Lastly, this month the Senior Center will present Manhattan
Melodrama, the last of a very successful four-part series on Leo Carrillo. A large crowd is
expected and all are welcome to attend.
On May 30th, the Swim Complex rented their pool to Valley Junior High School in
recognition of students with Outstanding Citizenship awards. Two-hundred sixty enthusiastic
students attended the event. On the 19th of June, the Complex will also host an end of the
school year party for 100 sixth grade students from Magnolia Elementary School from 1 to
3 p.m. Walk-in registration for summer swim lessons began June 8th at the Swim Complex.
Approximately 30 classes will be offered for all ages. Classes will begin on June 24th. The
pool will be closed June 20th, 21st, and 22nd for pre-summer staff training.
The Special Events Department already held two events this month. On Saturday, June 1st,
the City had its Annual Community Garage Sale. Over 2,000 people visited Holiday Park
and shopped at the 80 booths. Couches, clothes, surfboards, shoes, books, and other
household items were sold by community vendors. The event was extremely successful, even
the sun came out during the first day of "June Gloom." Just one week later on Saturday,
June 8th, the City held its first ever Youth Surf Clinic. Over 30 youngsters came to
Offshore Surf Shop and joined six local professional surfers to learn basic surfing skills. The
Clinic was from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the last half-hour spent devouring a lunch
donated by the Olive Garden Restaurant and an "Expression Session" by the professional
surfers. Over three dozen raffle prizes were handed out as well as a "goodie" bag given to
each participant. This year, the event was a huge success, and next year, Special Events
plans to expand and increase their enrollment.

In the Sports Division, the Adult Section has just begun Three-Person Basketball and Co-ed
Volleyball. As of today, teams total 65 for both leagues. In the Youth Section, the High
School Basketball Tournament is slated for June 27th, 28th, and 29th at Calavera Hills
Community Center. Twelve San Diego County teams will see action in this exciting event.
The Ballfield Maintenance staff just completed minor changes to the fields at Stagecoach
park. Jefferson Elementary School is scheduled for field rehabilitation work in early July.
City Council recently approved a benefit barbecue, the proceeds of which will go to benefit
the Carrillo Ranch Trust. The benefit event will feature Leo Carrillo's former 1948 Chrysler
convertible complete with steerhead hood ornament. The event will also feature a country
and western band, Leo Carrillo videos and films, books, memarobilia, etc. Your donations
for the Carrillo Trust would be gladly accepted during the August 3rd "Carrillo Days" at the
Public Safety and Service Center.
Parks crews along with the help of County probation workers from Camp West Fork have
been rehabilitating the nature area on the back side of La Costa Canyon Park. The rehab
work has improved the trail system, provided additional trees, abated weeds, and enhanced
the existing irrigation system. The cost of this rehabilitation project has been provided
through a Robert Z'Berg-Harris Urban/Open Space Grant. A number of local residents
have complimented the overall enhancement to the area.
And last but not least, our Recreation Superintendent, Lynn Chase, is retiring from the City
in June. Lynn has a total of 30 long years of public service in the field of recreation: two
years with Long Beach, 14 years with Azusa, and finally, 14 years with the City of Carlsbad.
Carlsbad staff are preparing a retirement party for Lynn on June 27th, at Magee Park from
5 to 7 p.m. Come and wish Lynn Bon Voyage!
