ITEM EXPLANATION;
As a result of the Commission's request to pursue action related to the Park Barrel Politics
article in Newsweek Magazine, the Council Legislative Committee distributed letters to the
appropriate persons regarding the re-instatement of a Park Service Panel to review the
selection of National Park sites. Please refer to attached.

Ridenour, Director of the National Park Service. I appreciate your
interest in seeing the National Park Service Panel reinstated.
Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind when
legislation to authorize and appropriate funds for the operation
of the Park Service come to the House floor this year. In the
meantime, I hope you will continue to keep in touch about other
issues important to Carlsbad.
