CALIFORNIA 92009 November 18, 1991 Mayor Claude "Bud" Lewis 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA 92008 Dear Bud : Due to circumstances I had not foreseen, it is necessary for me to resign effective immediately from the Arts Commission. I have become vitally involved in issues relating to seniors, and as you may recall I was a member of the North Coast Congressional Team for AARP/Vote when you apppointed me to the Commission. Since that time I have also become a member of the Legislative Committee for Health Access, the leading statewide coalition and voice of approximately 150 organizations dedicated to affordable health care for all Californians. . I have also been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Hospice of North Coast. These organizations have a multitude of important tasks that need to be attended to immediately. And in addition, I have been asked to join the Board of Directors of the Gray Panthers, and also asked to form a North County chapter of Health Access. The current flurry of activity by these organizations is aimed at obtaining a greater emphasis on health care in the '92 elections. Evidence of that issue's importance occurred recently in Pennsylvania, where Dick Thornburgh led his politica opponent, Harris Wofford, by 44 poll points--but lost to the relative novice who stressed health care reform in his platform. As an editorial which ran in the Blade-Citizen yesterday explained, "Political momentum is gathering for action on health care" but the issue is complex and "the sober proposals deserve serious study before our nation makes a decision." a 0 I. ” As you know, in political time the ‘92 elections are just around the corner. There is much to be done and precious little time to do it in. I want to do what I can to help. I very much appreciate your giving me the opprtunity to serve the citizens of Carlsbad, and hope to have that opportunit: again. I also hope you will be understanding of my decision to leave the Commission to join in the health care issue. A major source of that pride comes from cultural.opportunities afforded to the residents. Particularly enjoyed have been th8 concerts, all of them: the Friday afternoon sumner jazz, the Sunday afteqyn band and the jewel in the crown, the Labor Day San Diego Symphony on d%e green. I have shared these occasions with family, friends, and even arranged for my church group to enjoy its fellowship while attending the last Labor Day concert. I also appreciate the sculpture contributions that the city sponsored and feel these visual displays are a continuing gift to all who pass them and set our seaside conanunity apart from our neighbors. I would feel a personal sense of pleasure in having an opportunity to donate my time to serve the city in an area I enjoy and which I feel contributes to our distinguished individuality. 4 ’0 0 c e” * UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO - SANTA BARBARA SANTA BERKELEY DAVIS IRVINE LOS ANGELES RIVERSIDE * SAN DIEGO SAN FRANCISCO : LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA 92093 February 19,1991 Buddy Lewis, Mayor Council Members City of Carlsbad 1200 Elm Avenue Carlsbad, CA 92008 Dear Mr. Mayor and Council Members, This letter is to endorse the appointment of David J. Spencer as an Arts Commissioner for the City of Carlsbad. A close association as shared coordinators for a local church program brought me an awareness of David’s skills as a team player and leader. I know him to have a strong sense of commitment to the City of Carlsbad as a member of the Friends of the Carlsbad Library, a homeowner of many years, and as the parent of two daughters studying in Carlsbad Schools. I also know David to have a strong commitment to the humanities as an avid reader, playgoer, and concertgoer. What I most appreciate in David is an open mind about experiencing different and sometimes unusual events: he regularly attends the San Diego Symphony performances and has experienced the range of music from a La Jolla Chamber Music Society Summer Festival concert to a contemporary music concert featuring SONOR, the contemporary music ensemble of UCSD. His participation at the city’s Summer Jazz Concerts is really more a devotion and his devotion to the Summer Pops Concert in Carlsbad is really more a passion. I am certain he would bring devotion, passion and insight to the Cultural Arts Program for City of Carlsbad and therefore strongly urge his appointment as an ArtsCommissioner.
