RECOMMENDED ACTION:
City Council authorize by minute motion the installation of the Carlsbad School Pec
over the east door at the Carlsbad Senior CenterKarlsbad School District Adminis
Offices at 801 Pine Avenue,
ITEM EXPLANATION
The Historic Preservation Commission is recommending that the City Council autho
installation of the Carlsbad School pediment above the east door at the
CenterKarIsbad School Administrative Offices.
In 1987, the City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Unified School District reac
agreement that provided for the demolition of the Pine Street Elementary Schc
construction of the Carlsbad Senior CenterlSchool District Administrative Office:
The Historic Preservation Commission worked with City staff and the project cor
to salvage the identification name pediment which stated "Carlsbad School" locate(
the north door of the original school. Unfortunately, during removal, the pedimen
into several pieces some of which were not salvaged. The Commission has workc
a sculpture who can recast the pediment using the existing pieces and sculpi
missing parts. Cost of the restoration and installation is $7,500 which is being :
through community donations coordinated by Mr. Jim Gaiser.
The Senior Commission has reviewed and concurs with the Historic Pres(
Commission's recommendation. The Senior Commission also recommended
informational plaque be installed near the pediment to denote the historic significa
relationship to the Carlsbad Elementary School. a E EL: FISCAL IMPACT 5 There will be no fiscal impact to the City. The cost of $7,500 will be from con

Consultant ContracVAgreement for Pediment Installation
’ Members of the Historic Preservation Commission have talked with a sculptor, Robert Feely,
about doing the work on the pediment. He has submitted his own contract, but was told
that we will provide him with our contract prior to authorizing any work. Once the funds
for the project have been secured, we will process an agreement.
