DIRECTOR'S REPORT - FEBRUARY 1994
ADULT SPORTS
Andy Meade and Jill Prichard are busy wrapping up the Fall Adult Basketball season as
playoffs finish the first week of February. With barely enough time to catch their collective
breath, this duo resumes Adult Basketball games the 15th of February. Softball's start
is also imminent with registration and games occurring in late February/early March.
YOUTH SPORTS
Robin Bettin reports 50 youngsters have signed up for the annual Youth Baseball Clinic.
Slated for Calavera Hills Community Park during the week of January 10th, kids will be
treated to outstanding instruction by local area baseball coaches. Additional highlights
of the camp include the appearance of former San Francisco Giant catcher, Bob Barton,
drawings for prizes donated by Upper Deck, Chick's Sporting Goods, No Fear Clothing
and the Collector's Dugout. The Olive Garden Restaurant will provide a carbo-loaded
camp ending meal on Saturday, and Upper Deck donates a hat, t-shirt and cards to each
youth participant. Our thanks are extended to these fine community supporters for
making this instructional camp possible.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Lori Smith states this section is using January to prepare for a busy February. On their
calendar for February are a number of events beginning with Kidz Klub Kraze Day's on
February 7, 8 and 10. This event which will be held at Stagecoach and Calavera Hills
Parks, as well as Pine School, brings youngsters the opportunity to enjoy afterschool
crafts and games. Right on the heels of these special days is the annual Junior High
Valentine's Dance. February 11, is the date for the dance that will be held at Calavera
Hills Community Center. This Holiday Dance was a huge success last year and more
than 400 youths are expected this time.
To wrap up the month of February, Lori says kids can enjoy the annual Golf Clinic
scheduled for Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course. In conjunction with Golf Pro, Wil Kading at
Rancho, staff will be offering free instruction to would be golf stars and offer the
youngsters refreshments and a free golf club to all in attendance.
AQUATICS
Shannon Hooks reports the pool has just seen the resumption of the huge Masters Swim
Program. Following the holidays, area triathletes have resumed their training in this
program in anticipation of the new year's racing season. Shannon also states Carl Pope
and staff are continuing the recruitment and training of staff for the spring lesson season
that begins in late March.

CLASSES/DAYTRIPPERS
Gail Watts has been busy recently and provides a wealth of information about upcoming
events and recent accomplishments. Gail reports that 1100 holiday cards were made at
the recent Big Bang Committee/Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony downtown. Gail
coordinated the card making and saw half the 1100 cards go to patients at Tri-City
Hospital. Cards were put on patients' trays over the Holiday break. A second
accomplishment Gail forwards to us is the exploits of students in the City's Shotokan
Karate Class at Stagecoach Park. Carlsbad representatives took part in the Amateur
Athletic Union National Karate Championships in Cincinnati recently. Local kids included
Sean Langlais, Scott Langlais, Eric Langlais, Tuan Tuen, Ryan Hendry and Erik Barber.
These athletes along with other area athletes brought home more than 50 medals from
this prestigious National Championship. Teaching these stars is Department instructor
Norm Belstaring.
Gail keynotes a few special offerings in the way of 1-day workshops and classes for the
month of February:
• PEDIATRIC BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - February 1 & 3
• PHOTO ALBUM WORKSHOP - January 20/March 10
• *SO YOU WANT TO BUILD - Tuesdays - February 22/March 15
This class will be taught by our very own Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Bob
Holmes, a gentleman with over 35 years of "hands-on" experience in architecture!
SENIORS
Terri House conveys the information that more than 50 seniors recently had their photos
taken with Santa Clause at the Senior Center. Many commented this was the first time
they had ever had the treat to a photo with Kris Kringle. January 20 marks the date 40
seniors will enjoy visiting the Citadel for shopping followed by an excursion to the Richard
Nixon Library and birthplace in Yorba Linda. February 19th will signal the date when a
group of seniors venture to the Old Globe Theater to enjoy an evening of the production
of "Blues in the Night".
PARKS
Jerry Rodriguez reports a group of community volunteers recently took the time to prune
the rose bushes at Carlsbad's Magee Park. Part of the California Coastal Rose Society,
this group led by their coordinator, Grace Grider, did a marvelous job in pruning these
lovely bushes. To maintain the beauty of lovely Magee Park, these volunteers have made
this an annual ritual for the past 5 years.
