MTG. 12/5/95 COUNCIL GRANTS AND APPROPRIATION CITY OF FUNDS
RECOMMENDED ACTION: 3@ Adopt Resolution No. 9’’ accepting grants from the California Arts Council in the
amount of $2,591.
ITEM EXPLANATION
One of City Council’s 1995 goals for the Arts Office is to “provide a variety of quality
cultural programs, including all forms of visual and performing arts, to all Carlsbad
residents”. The Arts Commission recommends that the City continue the visiting artist program with support from the California Arts Council by holding a minimum of two
programs during FY 95/96.
The California Arts Council provides partial funding for visiting artists and has awarded the City of Carlsbad grants for the following artists groups: Access Theatre and We Tel Stories.
Access Theatre presents C.J. Jones - The Living Cartoon, a one-man show that combir
voices and signed language, riveting gestures and colorful storytelling. C.J. paints a
three-dimensional picture of his youth as a deaf African-American whose drive was to
become a performer.
We Tell Stories cultivates the “flower pot” image of society, stimulating an intercultural awareness of humanity that unites us and the beauties that distinguish us.
C. J. Jones (Access Theatre) will be a resident Artist-in-the-Community, December 4-8, 1995 and We Tell Stories will be resident Artists-in-the-Community, April 24-26, 1996. Both artist groups will conduct workshops, lecture-demonstrations, school assemblies
full public performances.
The California Arts Council has provided support for a number of visiting artist program in the past, including Make*A*Circus, guitarist Chris Proctor, San Jose Taiko and Thea of Yugen.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total for the artist residency programs is $6,600. (Access Theatre, $3,000 - We Te Stories, $3,600). The California Arts Council has awarded the City of Carlsbad grants the amount of $2,591. The remainder is budgeted in the Arts Office 199996 budget.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CARLSBAD,CALIFORNIA, ACCEPTING CALIFORNIA ARTS COUNCIL GRANTS IN THE AMOUNT OF $2,951 AND APPROPRIATION OF FUNDS FOR VISITING ARTIST PERFORMANCES, ACCESS THEATRE AND WE TELL
STORIES.
WHEREAS, one of City Council’s 1995 goals for the Arts Office is to “providc

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
