My first preference at this time would be the Housing Commission, although I believe my interests and background support involvement in either entity. Allow me to elaborate. My husband and I moved to North County almost three years ago, from Los Angeles. Initially, we lived in Encinitas while we explored other areas in and around San Diego. As a realtor, I was perhaps more "fussy" than most, about choosing where to live. While we explored the various areas, we read the local papers and learned as much as we pianning. in fact, i remember, on one of Oiii eariier visits io ihe city, being ni& impressed with what appeared to us to be a new business park on Palomar Airport Road. At the time, there was little traffic on the road, but we could see that some planning for future expansion had already been done. Coming from Los Angeles, this vision was like a breath of fresh air. We decided to focus our search for a home on Carlsbad. We loved the beautiful rolling hills and open spaces. We loved the quaint downtown area. We loved all the new housing and shopping areas. When we located a few houses we were interested in, we went to the Carlsbad planning office to see what the plans for development in the neighborhood might be. We supposed that much of the undeveloped land would not remain that way forever. But, we liked the mix we were seeing in Carlsbad. We have lived in Carlsbad for over two years now and thoroughly enjoy it. Among its many attributes, we especially like the "human" scale and size of the city, the community improvements such as the sea wall walk and the landscaping downtown, as well as the community interest in the arts and library facilities. We appreciate the oppodunity to view City Council meetings on local cable TV! 1 would like to learn more about this lovely city and work with the people who make it happen. I would like to contribute to the process. I think civic involvement is the best way to do this. I am hopeful that my background in real estate will be helpful on the housing commission. I worked for Tarbell Realtors and for Fred Sands in Los Angeles. Both are very large independent realtors. Tarbell had 60 offices and about 3000 agents in Southern California. I was the top agent in my office and always among the top 2% of agents in the company. I dealt primarily in residential sales, with some commercial business. My knowledge about building and housing really began when I was a child, as my father was a general contractor. At different times he built government buildings, apartment houses, and housing developments, on the East Coast. Even as a little girl, I was exposed to blueprints, bulldozers, and electrical systems, and remember playing among the studs in one of the houses my father was building for us. By the time I was a young woman in college, I owned (and used) my own hammer and toolkit--to the amazement of most of my peers! could about each of the areas. We liked what we heard about Carlsbad's reputation for .' . e 0 ADDENDUM Pg. 2 of 2 Application for Appointment: Boards and Commissions Harriet Marois But I was not always in real estate. After obtaining my Ph.D. I became a college professor. I was also an editor for an academic periodical. In addition, I wrote and published research articles for various professional journals. I taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels specializing in statistics and research methods, and other courses in psychology, prior to entering management in the computer industry. Even then I continued to teach part-time. I taught applied computer classes for managers in an MBA program. My interest in teaching and learning has never left me, which is why I am currently involved in some of the reading and literacy programs in town. As a matter of fact, I have been asked to design and implement a "study skills/time managment" workshop for the Carlsbad City Library Adult Learning Program. I am actively working on this currently. I believe all of these interests and experience might be of some benefit on the Library Board of Trustees. I also have experience founding and directing a non-profit social/cuItural organization a volunteer and working with other volunteers. I think these are the experiences most relevant to the commissions for which I am applying. My experience is perhaps more eclectic than that of others. But my biography outlines a good bit of it and can be found in various editions of Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in California. Incidentally, another of my current activities is serving as the business manager for my husband's band. George plays trumpet and leads the band. He was previously an engineer and business manager. which relied on volunteers for its operation. I am familiar with the trials and joys of being I I ( I I I I I f
