RECOMMENDED ACTION: 9 Adopt Resolution No. qqeL' 'approving the tile artwork design for the access areas of the Shore Protection Wall.
ITEM EXPLANATION
City Council requested that all artwork placed in the beach area be brought before it for fin; approval. The Arts Commission voted to recommend approval of the Shore Protection Wi artwork design at its December meeting.
This artwork design was reviewed by City Council at its January 7, 1997 meeting at whic time Council requested it be displayed for public comment. The artwork design was displayed at both the Carlsbad Library and La Costa Branch Library for four weeks.

The Arts Commission again reviewed the artwork design taking the public's comments into consideration at its March 5 meeting and recommended that this project be forwarded to Ci Council for approval.
The proposed artwork for the Shore Protection Wall access areas is a mosaic tile in varioui colors. The design which consists of 10 squares of tile, will be widely spaced in the acce areas to give a highlight of color to the overall design and continuity of motion created in tht wall pattern. The areas will be recessed in the concrete so that the finished tile will be flus with the wall. This is the final portion of the artwork to be approved. The wall design wa approved by City Council on August 13,1996. The process began in 1990 with the selection of artist Raul Guerrero.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funding was appropriated and the contract with the artist was signed in 1990. The total amount of the contract is $30,000 which includes the design development, public meeting! creating models for display and the implementation of the artwork. No additional funding fc
the implementation of the artwork is expected.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, APPROVING THE ARTWORK FOR THE ACCESS AREAS OF THE SHORE PROTECTION WALL
WHEREAS, artist Raul Guerrero designed tile artwork for the Shore Protection
areas; and
WHEREAS City Council requested that all artwork placed in the beach area be
for final approval; and
WHEREAS, the Carlsbad Arts Commission approved the design of the tile art
access areas and directed that such action be forwarded to the City Council rec
approval; and
WHEREAS, City Council requested the artwork design be displayed for pub1
and

WHEREAS, the Arts Commission reviewed the artwork design again at its M
