LIB CITY ATTY. , CITY MGR , c I I RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt Resolution No. (? 3- 75 accepting a grant from the California State Libr: the California Library Literacy Service in the amount of $28,857. ITEM EXPLANATION: On November 4, 1997 the City Council approved an application for a grant California State Library providing funds for literacy services under the Californi Literacy Service. The State Librarian has notified the library that a grant in the E $28,857 has been awarded to the Carlsbad City Library (Exhibit 2.) FISCAL IMPACT: The grant award has been made with the intention of extending or enhancing tht existing literacy services. Since the funding provided- by this grant is limited, amount of future funding is uncertain, the grant funds will be used primarily for purchases to upgrade and expand the instructional computer lab and to instructional materials (Exhibit 3). Matchinc Funds Library Name Carlsbad City Library Use this page and addtional pages as needed to describe how your library will use the CLSA matching hnds for the California Library Literacy Services requested for Fiscal Year 1997/98. Carlsbad City Library will use 97/98 California Library Literacy Services matching funds to upgrade and expand the instructional computer lab and for ongoing support of tutors and learners: Upgrade and Expand - Instructional Computer Lab (Equipment $22,500; Communications $420) Over 90% of tutoring pairs now use the instructional computer lab as a major component of their tutoring sessions. Technology advances, software demands, and maintenance issues make it necessary to replace the server and the existing hardware at the 6 stations with pentium units. A defective printer also needs to be replaced. Additionally, instructional resources will be expanded through Internet access to the online adult education network. Ongoing Support of Adult Learners and Volunteer Tutors (Instructional Resources $2,200; Personnel $1,200; Other $2,537) Funds will be used to purchase additional textbooks for adult learners, as well as sets of comprehension development materials. Funds will also be used to purchase the new version of LiferncyPro, the literacy program management software, for more efficient program management. Part-time personnel hours will. be increased slightly for additional supervision of tutoring pairs and computer use.
