RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Ordinance No. NS-442, amending Section 2.04.010 of the Carlsbad Municipal Code
to adjust the compensation of the City Council.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
Ordinance No. NS-442 was introduced and first read at the City Council meeting held on
January 20, 1998. The second reading allows the City Council to adopt the ordinance
which would then become effective the first pay period after the November 3, 1998 election
at which a current council member begins a new term and/or a new council member is
elected. The City Clerk will have the ordinance published within fifteen days, if adopted.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA AMENDING TITLE 2,
CHAPTER 2.04 OF THE CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL CODE
BY THE AMENDMENT OF SECTION 2.04.010 TO
INCREASE THE COMPENSATION OF THE MAYOR AND
MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL-
The City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California does ordain as follows:
SECTION I: That section 2.04.010 of the Carlsbad Municipal Code is
amended to read as follows:
“2.04.010 Compensation.
(1) Each member of the City Council shall receive as salary the sum of
$500 per month as authonzed by Section 36516 of the Government Code for cities over
50,000 and up to and including 75,000 in population plus the sum of $400 per month,
representing an increase of 5% per year for each calendar year from the operative date
of the last adjustment of salary, for a total of $900 per month payable at the same time
and in the same manner as salaries are paid to other officers and employees of the
City.
(2) The salaries established by this section are exclusive of any amounts
payable to each member of the City Council as reimbursement for actual and necessary
expenses incurred in the performance of official duties for the City.
(3) This section shall become operative only on and after the date upon
which one or more members of the City Council become eligible pursuant to Section
36516.5 of the Government Code for a salary increase by virtue of beginning a new
term of office following adoption of this section.”
EFFECTIVE DATE: This ordinance shall be effective thirty days after its
adoption, and the City Clerk shall certify the adoption of this ordinance and cause it to
be published at least once in a newspaper of general circulation in the City of Carlsbad
within fifteen days after its adoption.
INTRODUCED AND FIRST READ at a regular meeting of the Carlsbad
City Council on the 20 th day Of January , 1998, and thereafter
