In February 1997, the City Council authorized the conversion of the App
Macintosh computers at the Safety Center to IBM compatible person
computers. With this conversion, all the City's desktop computers would k
standardized and the Macintosh computers would become obsolete.
The 1997-98 CIP Budget allocated funds for the ongoing replacement of t!
older desktop computers and printers. Information Systems has replaced tk
slower 486 class computers and monitors. These computers are four to fi\
years old and are less capable of running standard City applications.
There are a total of thirty-two (32) Macintosh computers with monitor
keyboards and mice and forty (40) 486 class PC's with monitors, keyboards at
mice that have been declared surplus. In addition to the computers there a1
also seven (7) laser printers that have been declared surplus.
Staff has received requests from the Principal of Kelly Elementary School
Carlsbad and from the Executive Director, Carlsbad Educational Foundation c
behalf of the Foundation's KIDS ARE WORTH A MILLION project for the surpll
computers.
Because of the interest in computer equipment and the estimated value of tt
equipment, Council may want to consider alternatives for the disposal of tt
surplus equipment. The following are some options available to the Council:
1) Donate the surplus computer equipment to Carlsbad Unified School District
2) Donate the surplus computer equipment to public schools within the Cil
3) Donate surplus computers to KIDS ARE WORTH A MILLION!
limits of Carlsbad
~ 4) Dispose of the surplus computer equipment at City-County public auction
Staff recommends that the Council direct the staff to dispose of the surplL
equipment under any of the above options.
